INSIDE OYO NATIONAL PARK: HOW ILLEGAL MINING HAS TURNED A PROTECTED FOREST INTO A LAWLESS COMMUNITY. As some of you might recall, i did a light report about illegal mining carried out in Old Oyo National Park which is linked to Kwara State as well in 2023. After the report which, I remembered reaching out to Ministry of Mining, a taskforce was established to curtail the activities of the miners, it worked effectively especially at the Oyo state side but it wasn't working effectively in Kwara state. After the killings of 5 National Park personnel by bandits last week, which I broke the news, I carried out an investigation to see the level of compliance at the Old Oyo National Park where lithium mining activity is going, then i discovered the said mining has become a full blown community. The current number of illegal miners operating at Old Oyo National Park is estimated to be between 200,000 and 400,000, including individuals involved in buying and selling activities at the site. According to my research , there is nothing sold outside the illegal mining site that is not also sold within the site. Items sold include foodstuffs, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, and various forms of hard drugs. There is also the presence of sex workers who render their services to illegal miners inside grass huts constructed within the area. Additionally, medical drugs and medical items such as needles, injections, and intravenous fluids are openly sold at the site. Explosives are also sold to illegal miners and are used for blasting lithium during excavation. There are thousands of blacksmiths on site who fabricate various tools used for illegal mining activities, including shovels, diggers, chisels, and hammers. There is a high rate of child labour at the illegal mining site, also known as Daba. These children are used mainly for sorting lithium from rocks. The illegal mining site is divided into two sections: the Yoruba illegal mining section and the Hausa/Fulani illegal mining section. Both sections are located within Old Oyo National Park. The road leading to the illegal mining site (Daba) is not motorable. Access to the site is only possible by motorcycle. All extracted lithium is transported by motorcycles to Bonni, Igbeti, or Soro in Kishi. This indicates that illegal miners access the mining site through Igbeti, Kishi, and Bonni. As at the time of writing this report, many empty trucks are observed entering through Igbeti, Oyo State, heading directly to Bonni, and passing through Bonni to Jeba Oloru, Kwara State, from where the lithium is transported to destinations of their choice. They operate within the confines of laws established by the illegal miners’ chairman, popularly known as “CD.” Anyone who commits the crime of stealing is punished by death. The area is so enclosed that outsiders can be fished out by them. A bike man who carries lithium from the forest to the truck earns ₦12,000 per bag. One bag of lithium weighs 100kg, and they carry two bags, making 200kg. The miners are so familiar with the area that they can easily move to Igbeti, Kishi, and Bonni in Kwara State from the forest while evading security forces without being noticed, because many of them have been living in the forest for more than three years without seeing the outside world. It is imperative that both the Kwara State Government, Oyo State Government, and the Federal Government get hold of this before it becomes a security problem for the whole country. The irony is that what the Ghanaians are protesting about is not 10% of the same environmental catastrophe that is happening in Nigeria (illegal surface mining). I just screen recorded the path of the Niger River from Google Earth. Notice how it starts off clear in Niger Republic, then starts to yellow after it enters Nigeria, then becomes sand brown once it gets to Kainji (major illegal mining hub), then gets silted up to the point of having multiple sand islands between Lokoja and Onitsha. Look at the same comparison of the Benue River and how it is clear in Cameroon, then turns brown once it flows into Nigeria and passes through the multiple illegal mining areas in Nigeria's northeast. What you are looking at is a live map from space showing how over 70 million Nigerians whose water, food or livelihood come from these rivers and their surrounding water tables are being poisoned by lead, arsenic and other toxic runoff materials from illegal mining. What you are also looking at is a map that shows the riverbeds of Nigeria's 2 inland water lifelines silting up and becoming shallower, leading to dam failure and flooding in the surrounding estuaries - something that the idiots in Abuja are paid $1,000 by foreign NGOs to misreport as "Climate Change" by the same interests benefitting from unregistered mining of all kinds going on in Nigeria. What you are also looking at is a map that shows how the yellow or brown spots in the rivers' course through the North and Middle Belt match remarkably well with spots where genocidal incidents that drove communities off their land permanently were recorded. Yesterday I rode down to the Umzingwane river from The City of Bulawayo. In the course of the ride I was able to inspect the state of some of the Umzingwane’s tributaries and the river itself. The good news, as shown by the attached video and pictures, is that the Umzingwane itself has been in flood and is still flowing strongly. The bad news is that I witnessed illegal gold mining in virtually every tributary, and very few tributaries were actually flowing. In all the pools in tributaries the water is exceptionally muddy, a sign of massive erosion upstream. The attached photos show tributaries not flowing and some of these discolored pools. After so much rain these tributaries should still have been flowing but they weren’t. To explain the significance of this I need to emphasize that the catchment has had at least 600mm of rain this season so far and last week alone had over 100 mms of rain - and yet the bulk of the tributaries weren’t flowing yesterday. Despite all the rain we have had Umzingwane as at the 21st January is only at 30,1 % full. In contrast Mshabezi dam is 100% full and yet its catchment area is very close to Umzingwane’s. The difference is that whereas Mshabezi’s catchment is mainly in the north eastern Matopos and has hardly any gold mining, Umzingwane’s catchment has been utterly devastated by illegal mining. Towards the end of 2024 Government banned alluvial mining in river courses. Yesterday I saw numerous miners hard at it. As stated above nearly every tributary of the Umzingwane has evidence of mining taking place. There are large camps of illegal miners. Despite this I didn’t see a single EMA or ZRP patrol. These miners are continuing their illegal work with impunity. The consequences for our City are devastating. Government needs to bring this existential threat to an end immediately otherwise Bulawayo’s water crisis will continue, indeed worsen. We are fortunate this year to have had a good rains which have put some water in our dams. In a drought year there will be almost no inflow. So this illegal mining must be brought to an end immediately.

Sand Mafia K.Annamalai has stolen 1000s of tons of sand from Noyyal river by sending a Hyundai and a Komatsu sand mining crawler equipment into Noyyal River. Sand mining was done up to a stretch of almost one kilometer and annamalai's land was filled with the sand excavated from the river bed in complete violation of both criminal and environmental laws. A complaint was made to police, Thasildhar, Collector District Collector, Coimbatore and SP by one Mr. Babu but of no avail. Not even CSR was issued by the police despite agreeing that it amounted to public property theft. As a result of it, Muttathu Ayyanar Temple on the banks of Noyyal River is expected to be inundated. Local protests by commoners were ignored by annamalai who has been promising to meet them but despite one month of stopping of the act by locals, he has avoided visiting them. It is criminal act by of sand theft by K.Annamalai. It is also a huge environmental violation and a case is being filed in appropriate forum for environmental violation. The reason for praising TVK Vijay in New Jersey, America was to ensure no action is taken against him for such huge environmental violation. The act of sand mining was carried out without any permissions and i am filing a case against district collector for dereliction of duty despite petitions in this regard by one Mr. Babu, a local BJP Tamilnadu activist. Request CMOTamilNadu to order an impartial probe into as to how the Thasidhar, VAO and others colluded with Annamalai and permitted such a huge violation to take place. SP/Collector must impound the 2 equipment in question and take criminal action against annamalai for sand theft and environmental violation. Shouldn't we call him #SandMafia_Annamalai?!

There is widespread misinformation being spread about the Aravalli mining order, so let’s put the verified facts on record. A clarification has been issued by the Press Information Bureau, based directly on the judgment of the Supreme Court of India. First, this Supreme Court order was not passed to destroy the Aravallis, but to protect them. For years, multiple cases of illegal and unregulated mining were coming to the Court because different States were using different definitions of what counts as an Aravalli hill or range. Now the most important fact. The so-called 100-metre rule is not new. It was decided by a Rajasthan State Committee in 2002 and implemented in 2006. Under this rule, any landform rising 100 metres or more above surrounding land is treated as a hill, and mining is banned not just on the hilltop but also on its slopes, treating the entire hill as one ecological unit. The expert committee appointed by the Supreme Court found that Rajasthan was the only State with a clear, legally notified and scientific definition. Because of this, Gujarat, Haryana and the Delhi region agreed to adopt the same rule, along with stronger safeguards, so that one uniform standard applies across the entire Aravalli belt. Another major misinformation is that mining is now allowed below 100 metres. This is false. Many areas below 100 metres are still part of protected hills, connected ranges, wildlife corridors and eco-sensitive zones, where mining remains prohibited. For the first time, entire Aravalli ranges, meaning groups of nearby hills and the land between them, are being treated as one protected ecological system, so slopes and foothills cannot be mined separately. Finally, the Supreme Court has imposed a temporary stay on all new mining leases in the Aravalli region until a comprehensive Sustainable Mining Management Plan is prepared. Existing mines can continue only under strict environmental compliance. In short, the rule was old, the protection has been strengthened, and fresh mining has been paused, not expanded.

For the first time, entire Aravalli ranges, meaning groups of nearby hills and the land between them, are being treated as one protected ecological system, so slopes and foothills cannot be mined separately. Finally, the Supreme Court has imposed a temporary stay on all new mining leases in the Aravalli region until a comprehensive Sustainable Mining Management Plan is prepared. Existing mines can continue only under strict environmental compliance. In short, the rule was old, the protection has been strengthened, and fresh mining has been paused, not expanded.

An interesting thought I had on my morning walk. Filters on their own are not effective to censor all spam from motivated attackers, that's true. But filters do make spam more prone to censorship at the mining pool level. Miners can get away with mining transactions that are used for illegal purposes because they have plausible deniability: they don't know what they are used for, they are "just including what's relayed" by the p2p network. But with many forms of spam, such as OP_RETURN, it is not so. They do not have plausible deniability. MARA is perfectly happy inscribing NFTs and non-standard troll OP_RETURNS via its slipstream service. Since they are legally low risk, it makes sense for them to profit from it. However, if I was to submit something really nasty like torrent links to child pornography (or child porn jpegs) or Mein Kampf (illegal in many countries) MARA could not plausibly deny that it is publishing and distributing illegal content. It’s right there in the OP_RETURN for everyone to see. Consequently they would probably not allow it. If they did, they would get in trouble. And it would be much easier for the content submitters to get caught. If nonstandard node relay software (i.e. libre relay) started being abused by pedophiles, its likely mining pools would just ban these types of higher-risk peers. Of course the pedophiles can always run their own mining pools and get a few transactions every month: bitcoin would remain censorship resistant if you are patient enough. But now, with relaxation of standardness rules and “filters” anybody can easily publish blatantly illegal content as OP_RETURNS and get it relayed to a mining pool in a more censorship-resistant way, cheaper and more effective. The beneficiaries of these learnerships get employed at the mining companies or they can use the skills elsewhere. So the companies are helping to skill the locals. 4. The PCF (Phalaborwa Community Forum) is a POWERFUL Group that ensures that the interests of the community are prioritised. The group can mobilise protests that disrupt mining operations IF they feel that the companies are neglecting the community. It is the PCF that approaches the mining companies with requests for funding community infrastructure like schools, clinics, & roads. 5. The Phalaborwa Mining Company (PMC) is now controlled by Chinese Investors and the only reputation they have is PAYING GOOD SALARIES… I never heard anyone speaking badly against the Chinese Investors. Despite the Great Works of the Community Forum, there are other people in Phalaborwa who feel that the Community Forum is led by corrupt people who ask for bribes to guarantee employment at the mines…. That said, the Community Forum remains an effective tool for safeguarding the interests of the community. I think President President of Zimbabwe’s govt can adopt a similar approach. Yes, indeed, this is lawlessness by any standard. Even by banana republic standards, this is still lawlessness. Your country has a constitution, it has a government, it has a police service, and it has a ruling party. I am sure you can see that some of the people there are actually wearing ruling party T-shirts. It is lawless regardless of whoever does it. It is an embarrassment to South Africa as a country, what you are doing and what you are encouraging people to do. Your country has an immigration service. If people are in your country illegally, they should be arrested and deported through lawful processes. You do not go around destroying property, tearing down markets, and attacking people. It is illegal regardless of whoever does it. It is not illegal because I have said so. It is illegal because the laws of your country make it so. This is vigilantism, pure and simple, and it is tainting the reputation of South Africa, not only across Africa but across the world. If you have got satellite television in your home, you can see that these actions are being reported everywhere. It is not good for your country. This kind of barbarism undermines the rule of law, fuels division, and damages South Africa’s standing as a constitutional democracy. It is the actions of a few that are tainting the reputation of many. The average South African is not mindless like this. They respect the law, and they respect the fact that among them, in their communities, there are people from other countries. If those people are in the country illegally, you report them and the law takes its course through proper processes of arrest and deportation.
