Shona Robison was baffled by some basic maths questions yesterday about how averages work. It should be a scandal that we have a completely innumerate Cabinet Secretary for Finance, but so low are the expectations of this government, Robison’s obvious incompetence is tolerated.

I was an electoral officer; I witnessed some of these things that happened, and, of course, we should have outgrown them by this stage. After 26–27 years of democracy, we should not be talking about rigging of primaries or falsification of results.
