A developing early-season Nor'easter will bring a prolonged period of strong winds, coastal flooding, and rain from New York City to Boston this Friday into the weekend! A developing coastal storm is forecast to track up the Eastern Seaboard and stall off the Northeast coast, delivering a prolonged period of wet and windy weather from Friday through Sunday. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph will be possible along the coast, particularly from the New York City area up through Boston. Even stronger wind gusts exceeding 40 mph are possible over Cape Cod and the islands! The storm will also generate significant marine hazards, starting with a high risk of rip currents and building surf ahead of the system through the middle of the week. By Friday and Saturday, persistent northeast winds combined with high astronomical tides from a full moon will pile water along the shoreline. This combination will likely result in multiple cycles of minor coastal flooding and significant beach erosion, with eastern-facing beaches at the greatest risk. While exact rainfall totals will depend on how close the center of the storm tracks to the coast, the heaviest rain is currently favored over eastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and eastern Long Island. These areas could see up to 3-5 inches of rain through Saturday night, though widespread freshwater flooding is not currently a major concern.

The models are coming into much better agreement on a significant, but not deluge, rain event for West-Central Florida this weekend through next week. Heaviest totals will be along the coast. Emphasis “coast”. Expect on and off downpours - not always a washout - with the worst weather Sunday & Monday. Models show a widespread 2-4” Sanibel to Tampa to Crystal River to Panama City, but obviously with tropical bands/ downpours some spots will see much more with some localized flooding too. *BUT there’s been a noticeable shift “West” into the #Gulf next week with the moisture blob pulling away. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day feature the most impressive severe thunderstorm setup I’ve seen along the California coastline in at least a decade. The first round of isolated severe thunderstorms will come ashore tonight, bringing the threat of a isolated tornado and severe wind gusts over 60 mph from the Central Coast up to Humboldt County. The severe weather threat then expands into the Central Valley during the afternoon, California’s tornado alley, with the potential for isolated tornadoes, damaging winds, and even large hail. The threat then shifts south into Southern California tomorrow, where isolated severe wind gusts and a brief tornado will be possible. However, Christmas Eve into Christmas morning features the most potent severe weather environment of the week and could lead to a severe thunderstorm outbreak along the coastline from the Central Coast up to the North Coast. The combination of strong low-level and deep-layer shear with sufficient instability is rarely seen in this part of the world. I seriously cannot recall seeing Significant Tornado Parameter (STP) values exceed 3 along the California coastline. The peak threat window appears to be from 10 PM Thursday to 8 AM Friday. It would not be out of the question to see a Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued Christmas Eve night with the potential for a couple tornadoes and scattered severe wind gusts. I also believe this may be the first time on record that San Francisco has been placed under a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms in the Day 1–3 NWS Storm Prediction Center Convective Outlooks.

Multiple waves of Moisture could bring 1 Foot or more over several days. 🏔️ The Cascades get in on the action too, with up to 1 Foot or more possible. Tuesday, February 13, 2024, 8:42 PM PST: IR satellite shows a 545 DM low pressure that is undergoing intensification just 245 miles Northeast of the Hawaiian islands. This is a strong indication of a shift in the trajectory of the secondary low-pressure center combined. The strong, Pacific jet extension axis point is aimed directly at Southern California. There is now considerable high confidence that the developing storm will transfer heavy rainfall subtropical moisture that will be drawn up into Central California and Southern California by Monday evening. These abrupt developments started occurring very rapidly in the last eight hours and quickly switched the forecast to a stronger storm scenario setting up. More details will continue to evolve in the next 24 hours to 36-hour period. #ElNino #Califoniastorms

🚨Models are starting to LOCK IN on where the Heaviest Snow and Strongest Winds will be with our upcoming Bomb Cyclone. ✅ Every Weather Model is now on board with a DUMPING of snow across the Carolinas, with some spots getting several inches and some spots getting up to 1 Foot! ❄️ The highest Snow Totals will fall closest to the center of the Nor’easter in coastal North Carolina and Virginia, where up to a foot of snow is possible. 🎯 Cities like Raleigh, Wilmington, Virginia Beach, and the Outer Banks will see Blizzard conditions for much of the day Saturday as snow piles up and winds really start to CRANK. ⬅️ Further inland, Heavy Snow is also likely in Charlotte, Columbia, Greenville, and Asheville, with totals generally in the 3–6 inch range. 🌨️ Elsewhere in the Northeast, models currently agree this storm largely misses you, with lighter snow of 2–4 inches possible in Delaware, Maryland, and into Nantucket. ➡️⬅️ There is still time for small east or west shifts, but each new model run lowers those odds. ⚠️ We know this will be a big storm for our Carolina brotheren.
