This debate revives a question from classical antiquity: should political equality disregard differences in knowledge, character and civic responsibility? Socrates (c. 470 - 399 BC), Plato (c. 427 - 347 BC) and Aristotle (384 - 322 BC) each confronted this problem. Judged against their answers, in my view @EricLatiff is Platonic in his distrust of mass judgment but oligarchic in his proposed remedy. Socrates wanted only knowledgeable to vote and discuss state matters; Plato demanded virtue in addition to knowledge, while Aristotle those who understand common good to preside over the state. Latiff substitutes tax records and criminal records for all three.

Gerrymandering and denying voting rights to people with felony convictions have historically been ways to disenfranchise Black communities and weaken their political leverage. If someone is over 18, they should have the right to vote. Every single Kenyan should have equal rights.

Voting is just a crazy way of selecting leaders. When did you ever vote for a pilot to fly a Plane or a driver to drive a car? Leadership selection should be done the same way any other job is acquired. Trained for it and compete for it through exam trials

I saw someone conducting an opinion poll, and some people were asked who they'd vote for. One person literally said "I don't know. You tell me who to vote for". There should be an exam that people should pass before they're registered as voters.

Let's do it the other way round: those who don't vote should not pay taxes.

While the law gives equal voting rights, the weight of a vote is another dimension; thus, it is the voter's responsibility what weight their vote carries. Hence, we CAST a vote. Theoretically, that responsibility can be outsourced to the state, as Latiff says, but only partially.
