Should every Kenyan’s vote carry the same weight? Eric Latiff doesn’t think so! Latiff proposes a Tier 1 and Tier 2 voting system, arguing that citizens who don’t pay taxes or have criminal records should count for half a vote. Fair or undemocratic? #FixingTheNationNTV Nation FM Eric Latiff Nomadic...

This debate revives a question from classical antiquity: should political equality disregard differences in knowledge, character and civic responsibility? Socrates (c. 470 - 399 BC), Plato (c. 427 - 347 BC) and Aristotle (384 - 322 BC) each confronted this problem. Judged against their answers, in my view @EricLatiff is Platonic in his distrust of mass judgment but oligarchic in his proposed remedy. Socrates wanted only knowledgeable to vote and discuss state matters; Plato demanded virtue in addition to knowledge, while Aristotle those who understand common good to preside over the state. Latiff substitutes tax records and criminal records for all three.

We're arguing about suffrage in the year of our Lord 2026? Who shouldn't be able to vote next? Women, yeah, I guess they did lack that right in the last century. How about non-land owners? Too poor. The lame and crippled? Definitely no vote, in fact throw them into the ocean.

@EricLatiff Latiff, which Kenyans are those who don’t pay taxes? Are you familiar with the concept of VAT on virtually all commodities and services in the country?

Stupid argument. Classical definition of discrimination. Tax payers don't own the country. The country is for all. Even the dull and the ignorant. Democracy/ People Power: Power belongs to the citizens rather than a single ruler (monarchy) or a small group of elites (oligarchy)

This is the problem across Kenyan media. They mistake deep voices, tight clothes and make up for intellectual depth.

I agree with these thoughts. We need some sort of electoral college type of elections that will stamp out the politics of tokenism. People with no college degree should not vote for President, MP and Governor

This is a dangerous way of thinking. A Kenyan doesn't become “more Kenyan” because they pay more taxes, and citizenship shouldn't come in full and half versions. If you want to fix tax compliance or crime, use the law. Daktari na goon, kura iko equal 😂

Gerrymandering and denying voting rights to people with felony convictions have historically been ways to disenfranchise Black communities and weaken their political leverage. If someone is over 18, they should have the right to vote. Every single Kenyan should have equal rights.

Voting is just a crazy way of selecting leaders. When did you ever vote for a pilot to fly a Plane or a driver to drive a car? Leadership selection should be done the same way any other job is acquired. Trained for it and compete for it through exam trials

@EricLatiff,interesting that you propose to use Chapter 6 to violate article 38. Weighted votes VIOLATE freedom to make political choices and universal suffrage. You are proposing Apartheid! If you need political content, analyze how other countries run. Ukifika China, niite

People who think like Latif should not be allowed to vote! So there will be a database that says oh guess what you don't pay taxes so yours is half. Isn't the logical thing to make everyone pay taxes!!! Moron!

Beware of the Psyop operation being run by the state. Hii stori ya @EricLatiff it did not come out of nowhere. A certain politician hinted to it once. Now, we have a member of the 4th Estate spewing it. If we are not careful as Kenyans, we'll have @WilliamsRuto pull a M7.

Bwana, umesahau both clever and stupid people voted overwhelmingly for this government. This class division is just stupid, and it’s exactly what politicians use to divide people. Pull this crap down.

Tell @EricLatiff that it is an indictment on his ideals and character if his logic brings him to something similar to the justification for chattel slavery where slaves were considered three-fifth human and not as whole people to deny them representation. Wild!!

This is the problem with journalism as a profession. BA in journalism still has the lowest entry points, making such Githeri journalists the dumbest lot in any campus. This thinking manifests that in many ways. It's even worse that the 2 ladies did not counter meaningfully.

Typical misguided thinking of Kenyas middle class. Educated, working Kenyans make bad choices just as the illiterate drunkard in the village. We all have low benchmarks for leadership. The man does not realize that in a Utopian system he wouldn't even qualify to be a journalist.

There are only est. 9.87 million active income tax payers and according to IEBC there were 22 millon registered voters in 2022. You want to disenfranchise 12 million voters??!!! This take is weird, suspicious and should be examined more critically.

I saw someone conducting an opinion poll, and some people were asked who they'd vote for. One person literally said "I don't know. You tell me who to vote for". There should be an exam that people should pass before they're registered as voters.

Will we also have tier 1 and tier 2 leaders? Tier one for those who pay taxes and those with degrees and tier 2 for those who don't pay and have criminal records? Such foolishness makes one appreciate the beauty of silence

I'm not even going to entertain to listen to this. Tier 1 & Tier 2 of voters. @EricLatiff Are you proposing that we elect leaders based on 'classism'? How is that going to help us? Criminals & non-criminals have a right to vote for their leader. #RutoMustGo

While the law gives equal voting rights, the weight of a vote is another dimension; thus, it is the voter's responsibility what weight their vote carries. Hence, we CAST a vote. Theoretically, that responsibility can be outsourced to the state, as Latiff says, but only partially.
