Whistle Drill The Whistle Drill is a great drill that simulates the chaos that takes place during transition defense. Transition defense is basically a scramble situation. Players should not worry about finding "their man" during transition. They should be worried about taking away the lane and easy baskets, stopping the ball, and identifying where the shooters are located. The teams that... -Communicate -Anticipate -Hustle ....will be most successful in transition defense. The Whistle Drill requires players to do all 3 of these things and therefore is a perfect drill to prepare your teams to successfully navigate the chaos of transition defense. Taylor Jenkins & Brush Cut The brush cut is a cut that targets the opponent's transition defense with a fastbreak runner's early backdoor or a rim runner's trailer cut. Except for teams that use tagging up for transition defense, most teams try to sprint to the paint and matching up afterward. So, when the fastbreak runner makes an early backdoor, it automatically creates a defensive collapse, which leads to long close-outs or open 3s for the offensive team. Also, if the offensive team cannot get an open 3 with that cut, they adjust the spacing and are already breaking the overload at the beginning of the offense.

The answer is no!!! We put too much stock in A Teams, B Teams, C Teams at the youngest levels. It doesn’t matter… find a team that you will play, have a lot of responsibility, and get solid coaching. Take a breath, let the kids play and have fun, while learning how to be competitive, part of a team, disciplined, etc.

Scotland - Building out from the Back I feel like there is a huge lack of clarity in the way we play & that responsibility sits with coaches as much as the players: > Are Defenders to Play? > Are the "CDM's" to Show & Build? > Fullbacks Allowed to Find Space? I have watched McKenna & Hendry play out successfully in Belgium and Croatia with possession based teams and be good at it. I have watched Ferguson & McLean play in Top-5 Leagues and show for the ball and dictate play. Is this a lack of clarity, lack of coached "Style" or individual errors or a mixture of both?!

SIMPLE CUES ON DEFENSE It’s so funny, these are cues that I use with the young players that I coach and develop. So they are meant to be simple. There will be players/coaches/trainers/parents at higher levels that look at this video and think it’s dumb, or too basic. Yet when I watch bad defensive players/teams at the Pro/College/HS level … they can’t keep players in front, are late in rotations, and don’t finish possessions with rebounds. So idk, maybe this is just for youth players, or maybe it’s for everyone 🤷‍♂️

I’m seeing more teams run 4-Strg plays, the most popular play call is “Popcorn”, in this video I show WHY I would rather run “Poppin” from that formation to fully take advantage of WHY I’m overloading the D with 4 guys in the first place! Coaches: Food for Thought! (Sorry for technology, I’m on the road and don’t have my normal tools!)

COMMON DENOMINATOR OF GOOD OFFENSES There are many different ways to play offense… Fast,Slow, 5 Out, 4 out 1 in, continuity, run a million sets, etc. Based on personnel and philosophy, the system you put in might differ. But the common denominator between the best offensive teams is that they get High Quality shots. Layups, Free Throws, Catch n Shoot 3’s, etc. Wouldn’t it then make sense that when putting your system together, the most important part is the players having clarity on the type of shots you value most and the spacing/principles we need to get them?

KIDS: When you lose the puck, how hard are you willing to work to get it back? As a coach, I want you to make plays. I want you to be creative. I want you to play with no fear of making mistakes. The only stipulation I have is that when you try to make a play and you turn it over, you have to work like hell to get it back. Here's a great example from a team that MAKES A LOT OF PLAYS. Tampa turns it over in the Ozone and then watch the effort from the players to get it back. Hounds. They create another turnover and then get rewarded in transition. Coaches, amazing clip to show your teams!!
