When she was rehearsing, it reminded me of my relationship with Baby Dog, so Mum helped me make a special Compilation Video of us. It made Mum cry when it was finished. Sometimes I just miss my dad. Wish I could give him my truck or give him a little cash. (my old man was an OG so he was all about that cash;) When I met Isaiah’s dad, Ricardo - he immediately reminded me of my old man. Hard worker, struggled with hard times, but always did what he could to take care of his family. My dad even opened up a cleaning service, just like Isaiah’s dad. And just like my dad back then, the one thing, Ricardo needed was a truck for all his supplies and to get to and from work. I gave Ricardo my personal truck. I gave Ricardo some cash. I think in a way, this moment with Ricardo, felt like my dad was still here with me and I could make him happy. Got me emo. When I cry, I start to whisper. Love you both, Isaiah & Ricardo. A few months before Oliver Mtukudzi died, he called me to his base at Pakare Paye in Norton. He had just composed music for my documentary film State of Mind, which was about to be released. The film explored issues of mental health, and many times we would sit and talk, he would tell me secrets about the music industry. Often, he would ask me to switch off the camera, but on this particular day, he said I could record whatever he was saying on my phone. Oliver Mtukudzi created the music in all of my documentary films. Every piece of soundtrack in my productions was done by him. He always refused to take any payment from me after discovering that my paternal grandmother, vaDhiriza, was of the Nzou totem — the elephant — just like him. As you all know, Oliver Mtukudzi was Nzou Samanyanga, while my grandmother was Nzou Mukotomi. That connection brought us even closer. On this day, we were simply having one of our usual chats, but I did not realise it would be the last time I would ever see him. Sadly, he passed away two months after that conversation. I asked him why he had agreed to do the music for State of Mind at a time when he was extremely busy attending to his health. He looked at me, smiled gently, and said something that stayed with me forever. He told me that he did it because the film spoke to something deeply human — the struggles people face silently in their minds and families. He said music has the power to heal, to reach where words cannot, and that if his music could touch even one soul, then it was worth the effort.
