Paul Verhoeven's "Showgirls" (1995) has been consistently ranked as one of the worst films ever made and the movie was a box office bomb. However, it has generated more than $100 million from video rentals and became one of MGM’s top 20 all-time bestsellers. When "Showgirls" swept the 16th Annual Razzie Awards with record 7 Razzies, Paul Verhoeven turned up in person to accept Worst Director and Worst Picture awards. Verhoeven was the first director to ever turn up to collect the award. While accepting the award, he said, "I had the worst thing happen to me today. I got seven awards for being the worst, and it was more fun than reading the reviews for 'Showgirls' in September." He continued, "When I was making movies in Holland, they were blasted by critics as decadent, perverted and sleazy," Verhoeven said, while the audience laughed. "Then I moved to the United States. . ." Verhoeven didn't say anything more. Everybody filled in the punchline for him. He had a standing ovation for both his acceptance speeches from the crowd consisting of International audience.
