Eighth inning 2-2 game with no outs & a runner on 2B & Boston’s Jarren Duran hitting against Dodgers Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Dodger’s hedge their bunt defense & keep their right side back to max out their range in case he does not bunt. They are anticipating a bunt to the 3B side & have Muncy up & Yamamoto breaking to the 3B side after he delivers the pitch. Duran scans the defense & sees Freeman back & executes a perfect early turn base hit bunt into that dead zone between the pitcher, 1B & 2B. Perfect speed & direction. With no outs & runners on 1st & 3rd the Dodgers stay back & turn a DP & what turns out to be the winning run scores.

Drag bunt from left side. 1) show the bat before left foot hits 2) let the ball travel 2) try and catch the ball more towards the end of the barrel 4) master getting the ball down the 1st base line and you’re on 98% of the time. I’ll stand by that until I die.

Rockies down 2-0 in the bottom of the 9th with runners on 1B & 2B & they base hit bunt. The Red Sox are not surprised. They close with their 3B & 1B BUT their second baseman is way out of position to get to 1B before Cole Carrigg(A plus runner). In this situation the 2B can’t hold the runner on 2B & beat Carrigg to 1B. Looked like everything slowed down due to his lateness getting to 1st base. The SS has to hold the runner at 2B & the 2B has to cheat his positioning towards 1B so he beats Carrigg. It appears like they are hedging their positioning to protect the 6 hole in case Carrigg swings the bat. You can’t play everywhere. If you expect a bunt, you have to be in the best position to defend the bunt. The bunt was excellent. It was an early turn base hit bunt. Great direction & speed. The BHB choice put Carrigg in a better position to get out of the box fast(After seeing the ball down) & just beat the play to 1B. Of course you can argue that both teams did what they were supposed to do & the Rockies just out executed the Red Sox.

Situations❗️Runners at 1st and 2nd, hitter shows bunt and runner at 2nd steals 3rd. I am sure this was just a miscue but it’s a great lesson to show for this type of situation. If a hitter shows bunt and 3rd baseman breaks in, SS should be getting the bag. I always hated this scenario as a SS because you can’t shade too far up the middle incase a runner steals 3rd like this scenario but you also can’t be shaded too far towards 3rd incase a ball is hit on the ground to the right and you have to cover 2nd. If a 3rd baseman breaks in for the bunt but tries to get back to cover the bag on the steal, 9 times out of 10 they will be late getting there. Now, 3rd baseman can decide to stay back and cover the bag which is totally fine. It would just need to be communicated to the SS and catcher/pitcher before the pitch because SS can shade a little more up the middle and pitcher/catcher/1st would have to cover the bunt if it’s laid down. Every coach will have their preference depending on the game situation at hand.

He sees the 3B back off & pretty much give him a free hit. He looks at it as a double because he is confident in his ability to steal 2B which he does. He then bounces around at 2B & distracts the pitcher enough that he balks. He goes to 3B & scores on a sac fly. Not the kind of disruptive one man band stuff you see in professional baseball very often.
