For those that had the privilege to see the greatness of linebacker Derrick Thomas in person, they will remember the significance of what happened 37 years ago when the Alabama Football legend ensured the Crimson Tide would not lose in an 8-3 victory over Penn State on Oct. 22, 1988, inside Legion Field. Thomas terrorized Penn State’s Tony Sacca all afternoon and finished with three sacks, nine quarterback hurries, eight tackles and almost outscored the Nittany Lions by himself with a fourth-quarter safety. Led by the heroic performance, the Crimson Tide defense allowed just 21 yards in the second half. In the 1988 season, Thomas won the Butkas Award as the nation’s top linebacker and finished with a staggering 27 sacks. To put that in perspective, Alabama as a team had 25 sacks last season with one extra game. “We made some changes at halftime to free Derrick Thomas,” Alabama head coach Bill Curry said. “Once Derrick Thomas is flying around, all kinds of things happen. They start looking for him. It’s a real nightmare when there’s a player like that on the other team.” CBS televised the defensive slugfest and announcer Brent Musburger described Thomas’s afternoon as, “the most dominating performance I’ve ever seen by a college player.” Philip Doyle scored the only offensive points for Alabama with a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter, before giving the Crimson Tide a 6-3 lead with a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter. Thomas added his safety early in the fourth quarter and a late quarterback hurry ended Penn State’s final offensive series when Lee Ozmint intercepted Sacca. Penn State finished with just 169 yards of total offense (98 passing, 71 rushing) and eight first downs.

RIP Soldier Field: 1924-2002 Soldier Field died when the city of Chicago and Ted Phillips decided to completely destroy one of the greatest stadiums in NFL history. Look at those beautiful alternating seats in a classic bowl shape bringing you closer to the field! But since the 2003 renovation destroyed the original shape of the Soldier Field, it lost its historic landmark title. While I view Packers as rivals, Bears should have gone with the Lambeau Field gradual improvement approach. Let’s upgrade the restrooms, concourses, and hallways Then let’s upgrade the pro shop and hall of fame Then let’s add the suites and all the other extras If we had done it that way, we would have 80k+ seat capacity with all of the perks of a modernized stadium But Ted Phillips and Chicago opted for better luxury suites at the expense of the average fan’s seats. The 2003 renovation shrank the capacity by 15,000 seats and completely took away the originality of what made Soldier Field great. Because that job was done so poorly and because it was improperly funded, Bears have been stuck with a shell of itself for a long time If there was anyway to get this classic Soldier Field back, I would. But it’s time to move on. Lastly, one piece of advice to our new stadium build in Hammond. Give us a state of the art stadium, but be sure to give room for future and gradual improvement. Remembering the great Lee Morgan who was born this week in 1938. A prodigy known as the most expressive trumpet virtuoso of the bop idiom and one of its most popular performers, Morgan was a professional musician at age 15, and at 18 he was a featured soloist with the Dizzy Gillespie big band. His attack was aggressive; half-valved, slurred, and stuttered notes lent expressive character to his lines. Emotional complexities, from exuberance to dark moods, were typical of his improvising, as evidenced by his melodic intricacy and great rhythmic poise. He began leading his own recording sessions in the late 1950s, at first exhibiting a style modeled on Clifford Brown’s trumpeting. Even then, however, idiosyncratic elements of phrasing and expression appeared in his playing, elements that were integrated into a personal style during his first tenure with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Morgan was also part of multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s Jazz and People’s Movement where they organized protests and pickets, specifically targeting major television networks to demand better representation, fair broadcasting opportunities for Black artists, and an end to racist practices in show business. The black liberation movement of the late-60s gave the musician a new, political impulse, and he returned to the jazz scene to become a vociferous campaigner for black musicians’ rights and representation. Here, he is performing “Angela” with Billy Harper on tenor saxophone, Harold Mabern on piano, Jymie Merritt on bass and Freddie Waits on drums live on Soul! in 1972. The tune was composed by bassist Jymie Merritt and is dedicated to Marxist feminist activist and author Angela Davis.

Gunwoo, Yerim, Jian, and Dohyun from elementary school and Wonwoo and Sian from high school, I hope you’re all doing well. It’s your teacher, Min. Everyone has worked really hard practicing. You might be a little nervous standing on stage, but when I think of the days we played instruments together, I have no worries. I haven’t been able to meet Sueun and Junseok in person yet, but I heard they practiced really hard. And it makes me really excited to see our Mind Band enjoying themselves to the fullest on stage. I always hope that you will continue to pursue wonderful dreams through music in the future. Three straight 5A state baseball championships for St. Thomas Aquinas under head coach Rick Sabath. The Saints continued their dynasty Saturday with a 4-0 victory over Shawnee Heights behind another dominant pitching performance and timely hitting at Eck Stadium. Saint Thomas Aquinas used a combined shutout from Lincoln Boyle and James Forgy to secure the title. Boyle was outstanding in the start, allowing just one hit over four scoreless innings while striking out seven. Forgy closed the door with three shutout innings in relief as the Saints captured their third consecutive state championship. Aquinas struck first in the second inning when Tommy Costello delivered an RBI single. The Saints added insurance throughout the game while their pitching staff never allowed Shawnee Heights to gain momentum offensively. The bottom of the Aquinas lineup proved critical. Costello, Jett Wood and Luke Bernhardt combined for four hits, two runs and two RBIs. Wood finished with two hits, while Costello drove in two runs. Cambren Floberg battled on the mound for Shawnee Heights, allowing three runs over five innings with four strikeouts. Cayden Lindsay and Jackson Hayes each recorded hits for the Thunderbirds. Under longtime head coach Rick Sabath, Aquinas continues to cement itself as one of the premier baseball programs in Kansas, now winning three consecutive 5A state championships.

Costello, Jett Wood and Luke Bernhardt combined for four hits, two runs and two RBIs. Wood finished with two hits, while Costello drove in two runs. Cambren Floberg battled on the mound for Shawnee Heights, allowing three runs over five innings with four strikeouts. Cayden Lindsay and Jackson Hayes each recorded hits for the Thunderbirds. Under longtime head coach Rick Sabath, Aquinas continues to cement itself as one of the premier baseball programs in Kansas, now winning three consecutive 5A state championships.

White House World Cup taskforce executive director Andrew Giuliani weighs in on FIFA v. Jersey over transportation costs: Of the $100 million transportation grant that went out a month ago, $10.4 million went to New York/New Jersey. If you assume that there are 30,000 fans that are going to MetLife stadium over 8 games, that’s over 40 dollars per rider. If it’s 40k riders, that’s over 30 dollars per rider; I think the president has really done everything he can to really look at it and say we are doing what we can to make sure that for those that are going to be using public transit during the World Cup, the government really hasn’t forgotten about them. The president also wanted to highlight we’re not here to fix longterm problems that may exist in the state of New Jersey with their transit, or the city of New York or the state of New York. This is for the World Cup. Q: Is it acceptable for tickets from Penn Station to MetLife Stadium to be above $100? Look, I am going to make sure we’re focusing on what the President has done to make sure it can be affordable.

Tonight, Union Station shines in blue, white and gold for the next generation of Royals baseball and its historic return to the heart of our community. The restoration and reopening of Union Station 25 years ago, made possible by the shared commitment of citizens on both sides of the state line, marked a turning point for our city. Since then, our downtown has been reimagined and revitalized, earning recognition across the nation and beyond. We are vital and vibrant and ready for the next big step... downtown baseball. This is a truly generational opportunity rooted in both history and hope. Long before today, baseball teams and ballparks (some now remembered only in name) laid the foundation for baseball in our historic core. Included are the Unions at Athletic Park in 1884. The Kansas City Cowboys at League Park in 1886. The Royal Giants at Shelley Park in 1910. The Packers at Gordon & Koppel Field beginning in 1913. The Kansas City Blues at Association Park in the early 1920s, before moving in 1923, along with the Monarchs, to what would eventually be called Municipal Stadium. In 1955, the Athletics started playing in a nearly entirely rebuilt Municipal Stadium, followed by the Royals in 1969, before their move to Royals Stadium in 1973. So, we look ahead with clarity and optimism and are listening carefully for the details of downtown baseball to be shared. And while that process plays out, we’re excited about the opportunity to bring baseball’s legends, legacy, and love back to the place where it all began. It’s time to welcome downtown baseball home once again, for all of Kansas City.

Sports are perhaps one of just a few things that bring tens of millions of Americans together with a sense of joy and belonging. As a result, more than ever, teams have a role to play in building community and connection. In 2024, the Las Vegas Raiders did just that. Yesterday, a paper released by Tova Wang & Mike Hanmer ( told the story of how the team turned Allegiant Stadium not just into the most popular voting location in the state in 2024 but made it a place where families came to participate in the election in a way that was efficient and fun. Allegiant voting with the #Raiders also attracted young voters and people who never voted before: At the Allegiant Stadium poll site, the 4,200 voters who came on Election Day were more likely to be young, and more likely to be first time voters, than at other locations. We hope this story of success for the Raiders and the citizens of Nevada inspires other teams to give to their communities and to our country in similar ways. $For decades, biologists argued that birds migrate using magnetic fields, and that cryptochrome proteins in their eyes help them figure out where to fly. But the evidence for this has always been flimsy. In 1972, Wolfgang and Roswitha Wiltschko captured migratory European robins, put them in cages, covered the cages with a blanket, and wrapped electric coils around them. Once the birds lost their view of the sky, they still tried to move, or "hop," in the direction of their normal migration route. But when the Wiltschkos flipped the magnetic field around, the robins started hopping in random directions. They took this as evidence that, somehow, birds migrate using a magnetic sense. (Not bad!) In 2000, three theoretical biophysicists in Illinois, Ritz, Adem, and Schulten, proposed a mechanism for that magnetic sense. They argued that when blue light hits a receptor in the eye, it might create something called a "radical pair," locking two electrons into a spin state that a magnetic field could then nudge. They suggested that cryptochromes, light-sensitive proteins in the retina, might be responsible. (Speculative!) And then, in 2021, researchers apparently confirmed this! They took cryptochrome proteins from a type of migratory robin and put them in a test tube. They shone blue light at the proteins and found that this light induced them to form that transient "radical pair" state. And finally, they showed that magnetic fields could change this photochemistry where, in the presence of a magnetic field, the proteins formed fewer of these radical pairs, because the field forced a larger fraction of the excited molecules to ‘collapse’ back to their resting state. The experiment they used to measure this, though, has almost nothing to do with biology. You literally isolate the proteins, bombard them with a blue laser and, after each pulse, measure how much light the proteins absorb. For the robin cryptochrome protein, adding a magnetic field changed the absorbance *slightly.* But here’s the caveat: All of this was done in vitro, in a test tube, in a water-based buffer (rather than a cell). And, even worse, the experiment was done at 5 degrees Celsius (waaaay colder than the bird’s normal temperature) and at a low pH. And even after all this tinkering, they still *barely* saw a magnetic response! The news media didn't report many of these caveats. I randomly pulled one story from Science News and another from the University of Oxford, and neither even mentioned that the researchers ran the experiment at low temperature. The Oxford writeup actually hyped the result up more than the paper itself; that author wrote: “…the authors think the proteins involved could be significantly more sensitive in their native environment. In cells in the retina, the proteins are probably fixed and aligned, increasing their sensitivity to the direction of the magnetic field. Moreover, they are also likely to be associated with other proteins that could amplify the sensory signals." (Wow!) When Andrew York and Maria Ingaramo, two scientist working at Calico, heard about these results, they grew skeptical and decided to search for magnetically-responsive proteins — that actually work under physiological conditions — on their own. And that search, in turn, gave rise to Nonfiction Laboratories, a company that not only has created such proteins, but is now trying to commercialize them to make magnetically controlled cancer therapies that are only active near a tumor.
