There were freed blacks in the North like, Fredrick Douglas, who had his own published Newspaper. Reconstruction was a failure because Lincoln was too concerned about keeping the union together and was assassinated 9 days after the war was over. There was NO plane for integration. He and many in his administration were afraid of retaliation and retribution if slaves were given equal rights in a society they helped build through free labor. He even proposed giving them a free state in South America, instead of equally giving them land in America during the Western Expansion. The Emancipation Proclamation was ordered in 1863. It was ignored by the South for 2 years. Lee and Davis surrendered in April of 1865. Without the blacks fighting for the Union and defecting from The South, J. Davis would have certainly won the War. Davis even refused land from Lincoln in the West in hopes to assuage Davis and bring the Union back together. A portion of that land could’ve been given to those freed slaves since wealth was tied to the land.

1 million didn’t die. Sick from freedom says 1 million were treated for disease or died in that period, not that 1 million died. Certainly hundreds of thousands but not 1 million. It’s a good book though you should read it
