UAE Troops Given 24 Hours to Leave Yemen Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, in coordination with Saudi Arabia, has given the United Arab Emirates 24 hours to withdraw its forces from the country. The announcement came shortly after a Saudi-led coalition airstrike targeted a UAE shipment at Mukalla port, reportedly containing weapons intended to arm the Southern Transitional Council (STC) militia, which has been advancing in Hadramaut amid renewed tensions in Yemen's civil war. Yemen has canceled its joint defense agreement with the UAE. Landing in Geneva, one is reminded how quick we are to romanticise “the West” and run down our own systems in India. Geneva is beautiful, efficient in many ways, no doubt. But at the airport? No lifts or elevators where you’d expect them, confusing baggage belts, barely any signage or help. A lady with crutches had to hobble down the stairs because there was no elevator! It made me think of our own airports — from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to Indira Gandhi International Airport, Rajabhoj International Airport, Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport and Jolly Grant Airport — where navigation, accessibility, and passenger support are so great . Such amazing service and aliveness ! We in India often complain endlessly about how bad things are at home and how “great” “abroad” is. Travel teaches the opposite too: every system has its flaws. Lately there’s been plenty of noise about GPS jamming and spoofing, so here’s the calm, practical version from the flight deck. Jamming is simply interference, other electronic noise overwhelming the GPS signal so a receiver can’t hear it properly. Spoofing is more mischievous, that’s nefarious actors broadcasting a false signal that tries to convince the receiver it’s somewhere it isn’t. Both can be inconvenient. Neither is new. And neither is a show-stopper for modern aviation. Airliners were navigating oceans long before satellites were part of the picture, using inertial reference systems, radio navigation aids, dead reckoning, time, distance, and a healthy respect for cross-checks. Today’s aircraft layer all of that together. If one element like the GPS becomes unreliable, the system doesn’t panic, it recognises it swiftly, dumps it, and reverts to one of the other systems. Crews verify, cross-reference, and carry on. That’s the quiet strength of modern aviation and aircraft, redundancy and judgement. No single sensor gets a veto. No single failure defines the outcome. The airplane doesn’t need GPS to fly safely; it uses it when it’s trustworthy and ignores it when it isn’t. From the cabin, the night looks serene.
