Police on Tuesday discovered the body of an elderly woman found stuffed inside a suitcase and dumped into Ramohalli lake in Kumbalgodu, West Bengaluru. The deceased has been identified as Jayamma (61), a resident of Kengeri. "Police personnel recovered the body. The family has positively identified the woman. We are launching a murder investigation," a senior police officer told to media. According to police, Jayamma’s family filed a missing person case on July 16, stating that she disappeared after 3.35 pm the previous day when she left home. Her phone was later found switched off. The family inquired with friends, family and neighbours but failed to find her, according to the FIR. Kumbalgodu police have launched an investigation, suspecting the woman was murdered elsewhere before her body was disposed off in the lake. “We are scouring CCTV footage and examining other technical evidence for clues," the officer added.

A case was subsequently registered and police launched a search operation to trace her. Banda Superintendent of Police Palash Bansal said the woman was found safe on June 12 and brought back as part of the legal process. Her parents were informed and were called for discussions and counselling with police officials. During the interaction, the woman reportedly maintained that she wanted to stay with her husband. Police said she had married the man after leaving home and was unwilling to return to her family despite repeated attempts by relatives and officials to persuade her otherwise. According to investigators, tensions escalated during the counselling session when her father suddenly attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon, stabbing her in the abdomen. The injured woman was rushed to the Atarra Community Health Centre and later referred to a medical college for advanced treatment. However, doctors declared her dead. SP Bansal said that based on a complaint lodged by the victim's mother, police registered a murder case against the woman's father. The accused has been taken into custody and the weapon used in the crime has been recovered. "The woman had been safely recovered and her family was informed. During counselling and discussions with her parents, her father attacked her with a sharp weapon. A case has been registered and the accused has been detained. Further legal proceedings are underway," the SP said. Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and initiated further investigation into the case. Kamini Sharma consumed poison on Monday afternoon and was rushed to the hospital by her family, where doctors declared her dead. On Tuesday, police recovered a video from the phone of Kamini's aunt in which the teenager could be heard blaming her neighbour and alleged lover, Akash, saying his refusal to marry her and his family's opposition to their relationship had pushed her to take the extreme step. In the video, Kamini is heard apologising to her mother, calling her "the best mother in the world". She said she did not want to die but felt compelled to do so as Akash and his family were unwilling to accept their relationship. Following the incident, an FIR was registered under BNS Section 108 (abetment of suicide) and Akash was taken into custody, SP Hathras Chiranjeevi Sinha said. Police said Kamini and the accused had been in a relationship for around four years. "The investigation is underway, and further action will be taken based on the evidence," a senior police officer said.
