What i got from the show is, guardians are scared of Hal as he is odd with them. He defeated sinestro and started questioning the guardians. So, they want John who is ok with following orders as a marine to be Hal's replacement

Turned into a buddy cop movie for the middle part of the episode. Then Hal jumped out of a car again. That’s gotta be a “fool me twice” situation John’s gonna have to insist on driving from now on.
