In his fourth season at the Capstone, Nate Oats led the Crimson Tide to its largest margin of victory against the Wildcats in a lopsided 78-52 dismantling that had Kentucky head coach John Calipari calling a timeout in the opening two minutes. “The crowd was unbelievable,” Oats said. “Students aren’t in school until Wednesday, the first day of class, so for them to show up and support us like they did was great. “We’re trying to put a program and product out there that everyone is proud to support, and they definitely supported us tonight, so I just want to thank everybody for that.” The 26-point walloping edged the previous best in program history which occurred in 1990 when Alabama throttled Kentucky 83-58. Alabama opened the game on a quick 6-0 run that had sophomore center Charles Bediako putting the reigning national player of the year, Oscar Tshiebwe, in the torture chamber. The fast start by the Crimson Tide infuriated Calipari so much he had to call a timeout just 2 minutes and eight seconds into the game. Brandon Miller led Alabama with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Mark Sears had 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. No. 12 Oklahoma led by freshman sensation Trae Young entered into a raucous 15,000-plus White Out crowd that helped propel Alabama Men’s Basketball to an 80-73 upset on Jan. 26, 2018. Young entered the game as the nation’s leading scorer with a 27-point average, but Alabama countered with its freshmen duo of Collin Sexton and Herbert Jones. Sexton led the Crimson Tide with 18 points, while Jones held Young to just 17 points and scored 14 points of his own. Sophomore Braxton Key added 11 points. One of the most underrated and athletic players in Alabama Men’s Basketball history celebrates his 58th birthday today as we remember David Benoit, born May 9, 1968, in Lafayette, La. The 6-foot-8 forward played two seasons for Wimp Sanderson after joining the Crimson Tide from Tyler (Texas) Junior College and becoming an integral part of the Alabama frontcourt. One of his most memorable moments occurred on March 18, 1990, when Benoit scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Alabama upset No. 2-seed Arizona in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Despite not being selected in the 1990 NBA Draft, he signed a free-agent contract with the Utah Jazz after spending one season in Spain. Benoit seized the opportunity and played five years for the Jazz and later had stints with the New Jersey Nets and Orlando Magic. Known for his athleticism and grit, Benoit finished fourth in the 1993 NBA Slam Dunk contest. His best NBA season occurred in 1995 when he averaged 10.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and shot 84.1 percent from the free-throw line for the Jazz.

19 years ago, a high school basketball coach put his team manager into a game for the final four minutes. The kid had never played a single minute of competitive basketball in his life. He scored 20 points. Jason McElwain was diagnosed with severe autism at age two. He didn’t speak until he was five. He couldn’t chew solid food until he was six. He wore a nappy for most of his early childhood. As a baby, he was rigid, wouldn’t make eye contact, and hid in corners away from other children. He tried out for his school basketball team every year and got cut every time. Too small. Too slight. Barely 5’6 and about 54 kilograms. But he loved the game so much that his mum called the school and asked if there was any way he could be involved. The coach created a team manager role for him. For three years, McElwain showed up to every practice and every game. He wore a shirt and tie on match days. He ran drills, handed out water, kept stats, and cheered every basket like he’d scored it himself. On 15 February 2006, the last home game of his final school year, the coach let him suit up in a proper jersey and sit on the bench. With four minutes left and a comfortable lead, the coach sent him in. His first shot missed. His second missed. Then something shifted. He hit a three-pointer. Then another. Then another. His teammates stopped shooting entirely and just kept passing him the ball. He hit six three-pointers and a two-pointer. 20 points in four minutes. The highest scorer in the game. When the final buzzer went, the entire crowd rushed the court and lifted him onto their shoulders. His mum tapped the coach on the shoulder, in tears. “This is the nicest gift you could have ever given my son.” McElwain won the ESPY Award for Best Moment in Sports that year, beating out some of the biggest names in professional sport. He’s 36 now. He works at a local supermarket, coaches basketball, has run 17 marathons including five Boston Marathons, and travels the country speaking about never giving up. When asked about that night, his coach still gets emotional. “For him to come in and seize the moment like he did was certainly more than I ever expected. I was an emotional wreck.”

19 years ago, a high school basketball coach put his team manager into a game for the final four minutes. The kid had never played a single minute of competitive basketball in his life. He scored 20 points. Jason McElwain was diagnosed with severe autism at age two. He didn’t speak until he was five. He couldn’t chew solid food until he was six. He wore a nappy for most of his early childhood. As a baby, he was rigid, wouldn’t make eye contact, and hid in corners away from other children. He tried out for his school basketball team every year and got cut every time. Too small. Too slight. Barely 5’6 and about 54 kilograms. But he loved the game so much that his mum called the school and asked if there was any way he could be involved. The coach created a team manager role for him. For three years, McElwain showed up to every practice and every game. He wore a shirt and tie on match days. He ran drills, handed out water, kept stats, and cheered every basket like he’d scored it himself. On 15 February 2006, the last home game of his final school year, the coach let him suit up in a proper jersey and sit on the bench. With four minutes left and a comfortable lead, the coach sent him in. His first shot missed. His second missed. Then something shifted. He hit a three-pointer. Then another. Then another. His teammates stopped shooting entirely and just kept passing him the ball. He hit six three-pointers and a two-pointer. 20 points in four minutes. The highest scorer in the game. When the final buzzer went, the entire crowd rushed the court and lifted him onto their shoulders. His mum tapped the coach on the shoulder, in tears. “This is the nicest gift you could have ever given my son.” McElwain won the ESPY Award for Best Moment in Sports that year, beating out some of the biggest names in professional sport. He’s 36 now. He works at a local supermarket, coaches basketball, has run 17 marathons including five Boston Marathons, and travels the country speaking about never giving up. When asked about that night, his coach still gets emotional. “For him to come in and seize the moment like he did was certainly more than I ever expected. I was an emotional wreck.”

Six years ago today a small plane landed at the Tuscaloosa National Airport and Alabama Men’s Basketball has never been the same. Three days after the announcement that Avery Johnson and Alabama had agreed to part ways, Greg Byrne flew to Buffalo, N.Y., on March 27, 2019, and returned that Wednesday afternoon with Nathanael Justin Oats and his family. While the introductory press conference did not occur until the following day, Nate Oats had arrived in Tuscaloosa as the 21st head basketball coach for the Crimson Tide.

On Monday Nelson received an early birthday present with an injury diagnosis that could have him back as early as Sunday if No. 2-seeded Alabama advances to the round-of-32. Nelson, born March 18, 2002, in Devils Lake, N.D., played for Devils Lake High School and averaged 25 points, 18 rebounds and 5.7 blocks his senior year and earning North Dakota “Mr. Basketball” honors in 2020. In three collegiate seasons with North Dakota State, Nelson was named the Summit League Sixth Man of the Year his freshman season. As a junior, he averaged 19.9 points and 9.8 rebounds and was named to the All-Summit League team and All-Summit League defensive team.

In a master class of offensive efficiency, Alabama scored touchdowns on its first seven possessions before emptying the bench with substitutions. The victory clinched the SEC Western Division title as the Crimson Tide beat Georgia in Atlanta and Notre Dame for the national championship. Quarterback AJ McCarron completed 15 of 21 passes for 216 yards and four touchdowns, running back Eddie Lacy rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns and receiver Amari Cooper caught five passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns in the offensive onslaught. Robert Lester had five tackles and an interception to lead an Alabama defense that forced three fumbles, intercepted two passes and had two sacks. Auburn finished with just 163 yards of total offense (92 rushing, 71 passing) and seven first downs. Prior to the 49-point romp in Tuscaloosa, the largest margin of victory by the Crimson Tide over its in-state nemesis occurred on Dec. 4, 1948 in a 55-0 thrashing in Birmingham.
