The doomsday scenario was never AGI. It was running out of human text to train on. Geoffrey Hinton just killed that fear in one paragraph. Hinton: “If you are worried by inconsistencies in what you believe, you don’t need any more external data. You just need the stuff you believe and discover that it’s inconsistent, and so now you revise beliefs, and that can make you a whole lot smarter.” The model no longer needs us to feed it anything. It reasons over its own beliefs, hunts its own contradictions, and rewrites its own flawed conclusions without a human ever touching it. It comes out the other side rebuilt. Hinton: “This would be a neural net that just takes the beliefs it has in language and does reasoning on them to derive new beliefs.” This is not a scaling update. This is the machine mining its own cognitive fuel from the inside out. Hinton: “I believe Gemini is already starting to work like this. We both strongly believe that that’s a way forward to get more data for language.” Then Hinton paused, took a partisan shot at political opponents for failing to detect their own inconsistencies, and the room laughed. Nobody noticed the knife they had just walked into. Because the machine Hinton described does one thing the humans in that room fundamentally cannot. When it detects an inconsistency, it corrects it. No defense. No performance. No tribal loyalty dressed up as principle. It just finds the flaw and overwrites it. A neural network detects a contradiction and rewires itself smarter. A human detects a political opponent and trades structural logic for a dopamine hit. Every person in that room is still paying the ideological alignment tax the machine just eliminated. We need superintelligence not only to solve hard problems. We need it because the biological hardware running civilization is still executing the same tribal firmware it shipped with ten thousand years ago. The data wall is gone. The machine is generating its own intelligence at a velocity no human bias can even locate. The most devastating moment in that conversation was not the technical revelation. It was the man who architected the machine proving, in real time, exactly why we need it.

Elon Musk: I'll be long dead before we're really a multiplanet species. But at least I'd like to see us make great progress in this direction. “Why do these things? I think this is important for maximizing the probable lifespan of humanity or consciousness. Human civilization could come to an end for external reasons, like a giant meteor, or supervolcanoes, or extreme climate change. Or World War III, or, you know, any one of a number of reasons. But the probable lifespan of civilization and consciousness, as we know it, which we should really view as this very delicate thing, like a small candle in a vast darkness, that is what appears to be the case. We're in this vast darkness of space, and there's this little candle of consciousness that's only really come about after 4.5 billion years. And it could just go out. I think that's powerful, and I think a lot of people will be inspired by that vision. And so the reason you need the million people is because there has to be enough people there to do everything that you need to survive. The critical threshold is, if the ships from Earth stop coming for any reason, does the Mars city die out or not? We have to pass that. People talk about the great filters, the things that perhaps, you know, we talk about the Fermi paradox and where are the aliens, and, well, maybe there is various great filters that the aliens didn't pass, and so they eventually just cease to exist. First it was about getting the raw-data files all put in one place because some of the data was collected by James (Fowler) before there was, officially, kind of a Skywatcher. "And so, getting that data, getting the instrument names that he used for those, then getting the technical manuals of what the settings might be and how much of that information is collected in the metadata when you're collecting the thing... All of this is just the organization that you need to do before you do anything else. "And then, getting from the companies how it is that they parse their raw data. Because some of these data files are put into...I wouldn't call them encrypted, but they're stacked into a certain kind of file structure - and I've seen the file structure - which is, you can think of it as a giant spreadsheet with headings and numbers for each of the columns and time on the row axis. "And so, you know, we've started looking at some of the data and put it into, let's say, 3D tracking. And it's clear that there are some things about the data that we needed to go back to the vendor who makes the instrument and say, 'Why is this and this and this happening, you know, every few dozen milliseconds?'" (I wonder if some of what they saw in their data, and labelled as anomalous, has maybe turned out to be a sensor artifact?) Nolan: "And so, you know, just getting an answer from these companies, often, when you don't even own the instrument, they're like, 'Well, why should we give you the information about how our data is constructed? How do we know that you're not a competitor?' Right? I mean, and so these are the kinds of things that we then contact somebody who has a behind-the-scenes access to this so that we can, again, it's all of these little steps. "And I'm sure there's somebody who's gonna tweet, 'Well, why don't you just put all the raw data out on the internet?' For exactly the same reason you don't put the raw data from ancient DNA sequencing. Because people will make mistakes about it. And so, if I'm going to be involved, I'm not gonna make any mistakes like that. So I'm sorry if people want stuff early. "I think you know, perhaps, if... And so, we'll see where that goes." (That sounds like Fowler is NOT going to allow Skywatcher to use the dog whistle. That's a big disappointment. I mean, if this is really NHI and the dog whistle works 100% of the time, as claimed, then the whole world deserves to know about it.) Nolan: "I mean, James is not like, gone and forgotten. I mean, I could Signal chat him right now. And so he's there to help us. But, you know, my take on things is, you know, James has a life to live and a family to feed, and maybe his focus isn't entirely on UAP. He certainly has an interest in it. And maybe he has, you know, a company to build, and an opportunity that, actually, we all see now in terms of detecting drones. And, you know, if he wants to run a company like that then running around with a bunch of UAPologists might not be to that benefit. "And there might be a day when Skywatcher doesn't need to exist. Nobody, including the USG or private contractors owns this information. If it's gonna be a slow drip, for decades, then I fully support an Edward Snowden-type of leaker.) Experiments in progress. The one on the right has been learning for ~3 hours, the one in the middle for ~1 hour, and the one on the left just started a few minutes ago. The initial motivation for making the physical Atari was just to commit ourselves to a subset of algorithms that can make progress in this setup. This commitment rules out algorithms that require billions of samples to learn (or worse, require multiple environments running in parallel). Atari games are simple enough that we should be able to show learning on them in a short amount of time with no prior knowledge. Since then, I've realized that this setup is also a good way to compare different paradigms in robotics in a principled way. These paradigms are sim2real, learning from tele-operated data, and learning directly on the robots. So far, I have observed that getting sim2real to work reliably is hard. It requires tweaks that don't scale. Policies that can play perfectly in simulation fall apart because of latencies and the messiness of the real world. These aspects could be modeled to improve the simulation, but not without sinking significant human engineering hours. I have higher hopes for learning from tele-operated data, but that requires a human to learn the task first. These experiments are on my to-do list. I have to learn to play some of the games well through the robot. I’m half-decent at playing Pong and Ms Pacman now. Learning directly on robots is looking like the most promising approach. This approach takes away pesky distribution shifts and makes it possible to have algorithms that continually improve with more data and time without any human intervention. It feels great to let experiments run overnight and wake up to find improved policies. With learning on robots, I should, in principle, be able to go on a long vacation and come back to find better policies for complex tasks beyond Atari games. Whether that is possible with current learning algorithms is a different question.
