⚽ Day 42 of building my football/soccer game solo in Unreal Engine 5. Tonight, I rebuilt how the ball and the player's feet actually talk to each other while remaining separate meshes. I wanted to get pretty technical with y'all on a Saturday, so enjoy the read if you enjoy this stuff. Otherwise, just watch the video 👍 - Normal dribbling is impulse-based now. The foot arrives, knocks the ball on, the ball is genuinely loose between touches. Stop running and the ball keeps going without you. - We enabled Motion Warping on all 10 turn animations so the montages will now bend the player's path mid-turn so the boot arrives at the ball, instead of the ball being dragged to wherever the animator drew it previously. - Every contact is authored on the animation itself. I track which frame, which foot, which part of the boot, and whether it CARRIES the ball (sole on a drag-back) or STRIKES it (inside-of-the-foot on a 90) - Each contact declares how close the player needs to be. A sole on top of the ball, an inside-foot redirect and an outside-foot push all reach differently — 75 / 63 / 53 units - Touches are credited only to the foot the animation is actually dribbling with - Sideways and forward correction are capped separately. Pushing the ball across your line keeps it. Pushing it forward is how you lose it - Touch strength scales with your speed. The ball has to leave the foot ~1.27× faster than you're running just to stay ahead. This was an annoying bug I kept running into where I overran the ball and left it behind. The Gators open practice with a game where the dribble doesn't exist. One minute. Offense tags as many defenders as possible. Ball movement only. Dick DeVenzio would have loved this. In STUFF Good Players Should Know, he wrote: "You can slow it down and set it up with a pass. You can get on balance without dribbling. You can think better when you DON'T have the ball and put more pressure on the defense, too." Take the dribble away and there's nowhere to hide. You can't pound the ball while you decide. $I nearly 2x'd the speed while only using +1GB VRAM with the new MTP update in llama.cpp 🤯 You need to add these flags to start using it: --spec-type draft-mtp \ --spec-draft-p-min 0.75 \ --spec-draft-n-max 2 My results with Qwen3.6 27B on a single RTX 5080 ↓ ⚪️ no flag (without mtp) → 54.3 tok/s with 13.26GB VRAM 🔵 --spec-draft-n-max 2 → 90.7 tok/s with 14.29GB VRAM 🔴 --spec-draft-n-max 2 --spec-draft-p-min 0.75 → 93.9 tok/s with 14.30GB VRAM 🟢 --spec-draft-n-max 6 --spec-draft-p-min 0.75 → 93.9 tok/s with 14.87GB VRAM Increasing to 6 draft tokens didn't help my setup for some reason. I made sure to test with a low context length to have enough headroom and eliminate risk of vram stress. From my understanding: 1) The speed gains are very task-dependent. You need to test across a wide range of tasks to get a realistic idea of the benefits 2) We’re already running heavily quantized GGUF models (Q3, Q4, Q6, etc.), so we already benefit from strong speed/performance thanks to the reduced size. That’s why some people are seeing little to no improvement compared to MLX or other quantized versions The progress over the past few days has been insane to say the least. However, MTP now consumes significantly more VRAM. Personally 16GB just isn't enough to use MTP and run it with a good context size. To Adapt or Not to Adapt? Real-Time Adaptation for Semantic Segmentation paper page: The goal of Online Domain Adaptation for semantic segmentation is to handle unforeseeable domain changes that occur during deployment, like sudden weather events. However, the high computational costs associated with brute-force adaptation make this paradigm unfeasible for real-world applications. In this paper we propose HAMLET, a Hardware-Aware Modular Least Expensive Training framework for real-time domain adaptation. Our approach includes a hardware-aware back-propagation orchestration agent (HAMT) and a dedicated domain-shift detector that enables active control over when and how the model is adapted (LT). Thanks to these advancements, our approach is capable of performing semantic segmentation while simultaneously adapting at more than 29FPS on a single consumer-grade GPU. Our framework's encouraging accuracy and speed trade-off is demonstrated on OnDA and SHIFT benchmarks through experimental results.

I hereby continue with my campaign and here is day 4 of trying to convince Manchester City to sign Anis Hadj Moussa. Now, let's talk about him (informal scouting report), a player I have been hyping for days and who, I believe provides us the perfect balance of instant impact and upside potential. According to what I have seen, he profiles as an explosive, direct attacker with elite one-versus-one dribbling ability and a strong goalscoring threat from wide areas. His game is built around carrying the ball into dangerous positions, cutting inside onto his stronger left foot, and either shooting or creating chances for teammates. Does that sound familiar to my fellow City fans? My honest opinion (executive summary): Moussa is a high-upside, left-footed right winger (which is what we need) with elite one-versus-one dribbling, exceptional progressive carrying, and a proven goalscoring threat from wide areas. He is ideally suited to possession-based systems that value direct attacking play (vertical patterns) and can benefit from his ability to break down low-block defenses (should I talk further about low-blocks to a City fan, eh?) I believe that his primary areas for development lie in defensive work rate, pass completion in build-up phases, and tactical discipline when out of possession, however, he would be an amazing addition to our squad.

There aren’t many 6’7, 20 year old primary ball handlers who can self-generate paint touches, navigate screens and flash the craftiness that Sergio De Larrea has...⤵️ Sergio De Larrea isn’t a particularly impressive finisher at the rim, 58.7% and just 43.7% as a driver, BUT his foundation but physically and from a skillset perspective is more advanced then he gets credit for and is a better foundation then a number of projected lottery picks. At 6’7, De Larrea boasts true positional size and strength, which he pairs with impressive burst and handle to create legitimate separation, both in isolation and out of the pick-and-roll. As a ball handler, he plays with advanced pace, regularly snaking screens and getting defenders stuck on his back. He is exceedingly comfortable dribbling through the heart of defenses. Once in the lane, he has the frame/strength to handle moderate physicality but it’s his craft around the rim that really pops and highlights his offensive upside. Players at De Larrea’s size rarely have his combination of pacing, ball handling and creativity. His ability to play at top speed while being able to immediately de-accelerate is exciting, especially at his size. He does a great job actively keeping defenders on there heels, with a set of slight dribble hesitations and eye/head manipulation. He plays off two feet in the paint and has an awesome step-through game. Brett Wichrowski Brett Wichrowski Acquired: 2023 13th round selection Measurables: 6’2”, 177 lbs, 21 years old Cliff Notes: The Brewers picked the Junior out of Bryant who had steadily improved over his NCAA career last year. By his junior campaign, Wichrowski posted a 4.50 ERA and 64 Ks/25 BBs in 50 innings pitched. He also has steadily added velocity in his offseasons (with Baseball Performance Center), which he showed off in the Spring Breakout series sitting 99 mph. In the Spring Breakout game he went 2 IP with zero earned & one strikeout plus in his outing in Big League Camp he went one scoreless, facing three batters with a K. His mix appears to have a 4-seam and 2-seam fastball with secondary offerings of a cutter, slider, and change-up. All look relatively effective playing off his fastballs, with the cutter jumping out of his hand and slider/change-up being effective enough off of his velocity. With his experience in NCAA baseball, the New England Collegiate Baseball League and the Cape Cod League, I would not be surprised if the Brewers start him in at least A ball. Wichrowski played three seasons at Bryant where he progressed as one would expect. His sophomore campaign was across 38 innings where he posted a 5.21 ERA, 37 Ks, and a high 30 BBs. His Junior season he demonstrated serious improvements, giving up less earned runs on average as well as upping his K rate while decreasing his BB rate. He rode that good season into being a Brewers Draft Pick. I look forward to seeing how the Brewers deploy the righty in the minors. As mentioned above, in the Spring Breakout game he was topping out at 99 mph. He uses that speed when throwing both of his fastballs, while his cutter is about 10 mph slower and effectively horizontally cuts due to his excellent extension. His slider is another nice option for glove-side movement, while he continues to work on his change up. His college walk rates/WHIP are something that are of concern, but more time in the Brewers organization should help him control his offerings better. His multiple plus offerings give Wichrowski a great chance to be an MLB contributor as long as he can improve control (which he showed in his Spring Breakout & Spring Training outings) He is definitely a guy to keep an eye on in 2024 and I could see him gaining transaction on some prospect lists.
