July 23, 1996. At the Atlanta Olympics, a tiny gymnast named Kerri Strug landed a vault on a badly injured ankle and gave America one of the most unforgettable moments in sports history. The US women's gymnastics team, the Magnificent Seven, was on the verge of winning its first ever team gold medal. It came down to the vault. On her first attempt, Strug crashed the landing and felt something snap in her ankle, tearing ligaments. She could barely walk, and the team appeared to still need one more solid vault to lock up gold. So she did it anyway. Limping back to the runway on a damaged leg, she sprinted, launched herself, and stuck the landing almost entirely on one foot. She held the pose just long enough to salute the judges, then collapsed to the mat in pain and had to be carried off by her coach. The image of that little athlete gutting out a vault on one leg, then being carried to the medal stand, became instantly iconic. The US won its first women's team gymnastics gold. Yuri Vardanyan would go on to become an Olympic Champion, a seven-time World Champion, and the Armenian titan who set 43 world records and stood atop the world of weightlifting through the late 1970s and early 1980s. Vardanyan began training in 1970 at the age of 14 under his uncle Sergey Vardanyan at the legendary Lokomotiv club, in a city already famous for producing some of the strongest men in the world. By 20, he had broken every world record in his division. By 21, he was a World Champion. By 24, he was an Olympic gold medalist. Moscow, 1980: Five World Records In A Single Day When Vardanyan stepped onto the platform at the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics, no one in the arena could have predicted what they were about to witness.
