I want a machine like this ruthlessly knocking unnecessary imports out.

this machine can sort out unripe tomatoes by using a set of sensors 😁

would be better if there was a person controlling it like a pinball machine with the 2 side buttons

How is it able to spot the tomatoes? Is it color or Size?

Profilbild von Jason

It knows by size. A laser rebounds off objects and if the object reflects enough laser then it's got a large surface area, thus clearly a tomato.

This is why grocery store tomatoes are so bland. Doing this with a tomato that's actually ripe enough to develop flavor would absolutely destroy it (and if it didn't it'd crush itself during shipping anyway)

Optical tomato sorters use high-speed cameras and sensors to scan each tomato's color, shape, and defects in milliseconds as they race down a conveyor. Software analyzes reflections to spot unripe, green ones, triggering precise pneumatic fingers or air jets to flick rejects away...

^— This machine is why: “Tomatoes don’t taste like they used to” In order to be able to do this sorting the tomatoes have to be picked when they are still hard. That means they aren’t ripe. All the flavor and nutrients come from ripening on the plant. So when you pick them early they end up not really tasting like much of anything. Another way to get cheap “food”.

The air jets fire in precise bursts (lasting just milliseconds) and can handle up to several thousand ejections per minute without ever touching the fruit, far gentler than. These machines helped make modern supermarket tomatoes firmer and less flavorful on purpose. Breeders changed the genetics so they survive machine harvesting & sorting without turning to mush. Taste got sacrificed for logistics. Worth it?
