Small assumptions allow big lies. There's a small assumption that if Trump's DOJ prosecutes any high-profile Democrats, then that's "targeting political enemies." If you buy into that small assumption, it allows you to fall prey to the big lie. The big lie is that prosecuting Democrats should be avoided... because it will backfire—politically—in the long run. It will give Democrats ammo, many people say, to make the case to the electorate that "Trump is jailing his political foes!" And a related misconception is, "If Republicans 'retaliate (their word, not mine),' then when the Democrats get back in power, they'll do it right back to the Republicans!" Vice President JD Vance deftly exposed this big lie when he articulated, "Here's something that I want every conservative to remember, it's an important part of my entire political philosophy, is we cannot be afraid to do something because the left might do it in the future. The left is already going to do it regardless of whether we do it...that is the takeaway of the last 40 years." If Democrats committed crimes—and MANY OF THEM HAVE—they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
