Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire, was founded by the Aztec or Mexica people around 1325 CE. According to legend, the Mexica founded Tenochtitlan after leaving their homeland of Aztlan at the direction of their god, Huitzilopochtli. Huitzilopochtli directed them to build where they saw an eagle perched on a cactus, eating a snake. When they saw this exact scene on an island (located in what was once Lake Texcoco), they interpreted it as a sign from their god and founded Tenochtitlan on that island. The Aztec region of Mesoamerica, called Anáhuac, contained a group of five connected lakes. The largest of them was Lake Texcoco. The Aztec built their capital city, Tenochtitlan, on Lake Texcoco. Built on two islands, the area was extended using chinampas—small, artificial islands created above the waterline that were later consolidated. Tenochtitlan eventually reached an area of more than 13 square kilometers (five square miles). Causeways that doubled as dikes connected the island to the mainland and separated freshwater from salt water, protecting the chinampas. 24.02.2022: the chronicle of a day that changed the fate of the entire world ▪️ It all started with Putin's speech, in which he announced the decision to start the so-called "SMO". ▪️ At 5:00 Russian troops attacked the state border of Ukraine from Russia and Belarus within the borders of Luhansk, Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv and Zhytomyr regions. Besides, the attack was led from the direction of occupied Crimea. ▪️ Missile strikes hit dozens of cities. ▪️ At 6:11, President Zelenskyy called the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), which imposed martial law. ▪️ At 6:46, Zelenskyy addressed Ukrainians: "Don't panic! We are strong, we are ready for everything. We will defeat everyone. Because we are Ukraine. Glory to Ukraine!". ▪️ As early as 7:53 there were reports that 5 airplanes and 1 helicopter of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation were shot down. ▪️ It also became known about the first casualties among our military and civilian population. ▪️ 10:40 two "unidentified targets" threatened Ukrainian border guards on Zmiinyi (Snake) Island in the Black Sea. Tales of Wudan - The Mysterious Old Man In the year 644, as a young student of the Wudan style, it was my job to sweep the training area each morning. ‍ I started this job at 3:45am - and, with vigor, would finish with a few minutes to spare before the 6am training. ‍ There was an old man with no hands and no feet - the only man, to whom Master Po would bow - who would sit atop a tree trunk and watch me complete this task. ‍ Every morning, he appeared and watched in admiration. It was a full 219 years, before I mustered the courage to speak with him. “Why do you watch me sweep?” I asked, puzzled. ‍ “Ah, young Cobra, what better unison of the hands and the feet than sweeping a floor? If you were in my position, you would savour the task!” he replied. ‍ I looked at the stumps where his hands and feet once were, then looked up at him. He knew what I wanted to ask... But I was afraid to appear disrespectful. ‍ Truly, it was none of my business. Curiosity got the better of me. “What happened to you?” I said, looking towards the ground. ‍ I was sure he was contemplating reprimanding me. I was pleased, when he began to speak. ‍ “Wudan was not always such a peaceful place,” he began. “Warring tribes fought for this mountains power and strange creatures lurked in every corner. Before myself and a few brave others, including Master Po, banished them from the mountain.” ‍ I placed my broom on the floor, sat down and continued to listen. ‍ “While fighting bandits near the Yushu river, a water snake grabbed my right foot and began to pull me under. Fearing for my life, and unable to see the snake through the bloodied water, I removed my right foot with one slice of my sword. The only alternative was to drown.” ‍ Still looking down, I raised my eyes to take a glimpse at his right stump. “What about your left foot?” I asked. ‍ He placed his right leg under his robe and exposed his left before continuing his story. ‍ “The next day, I was limping and slowing the group down. I asked to be left to die, but Po demanded that I fight. Soon, a daughter of a previously slain bandit had spotted us and fired an arrow from a ridge which landed squarely in my left foot. Fearing gangrene, I removed my left foot with one slice of my sword.” ‍ “What happened to your hands?” I asked quickly. ‍ “My left hand was snared by a Golden Dragon in that now empty cave you children enjoy, to avoid being pulled into darkness and killed. I removed my left hand with one slice of my sword...” ‍ He paused. “My right hand was caught in a bear trap the same afternoon, fearing death, I removed it with my teeth.” ‍ I looked at his right hands stump. It was ragged. Not a clean cut like the others. It still looked painful. He looked relieved when the story was over, it pained him to relive the events. ‍ He took a sigh of relief and moved his gaze from me back over to the floor I was sweeping. I however was confused. ‍ “How did you find the strength, to remove limb after limb in such gruesome fashion? I don’t think I could do that.” ‍ He smiled. “Well then you would be dead. And you would never tell your story to anybody, would you? I didn’t find the strength to die.” ‍ I bowed and returned to sweeping. The conversation made me minutes late for training. Master Po beat me severely. ‍ The next morning when I rose to sweep, the man was not there. I never saw him again. ‍ Such is the way of Wudan.

Bhavacakra or Wheel of Becoming/Wheel of Life is a form of a mandala or tanka (painted wall hanging), used primarily in Tibetan Buddhism. The painting of a tanka is itself a form of mediation. Its meaning is very complex, and can be read to represent at least three different realms of manifested effects of karmic actions. It can be read as a diagram for the six different kinds of existence into which one may be born into during the middle rounds of samsara. It can be read as symbolizing each of the different realms of human existence, lived out by certain kinds of people according to their karmic fortunes of personality type and socioeconomic status. Or it can be read as a description of situations or states of consciousness that everybody passes through again and again in the course of a single day. Its iconographic meaning is correspondingly complex as well. In the background are varied Buddhist symbols, such as the moon, clouds in shape of swastika, and always a representation of at least one Buddha or Bodhisattva, seen attempting to help sentient beings to find their way to Nirvana. The wheel is held by the jaws, hands and feet of the demon, Yama, the judge of the dead, who turns the wheel. Yama represents the ignorance that comes from greed and "selfhood," that keeps the wheel of suffering turning. The outer rim of the wheel is divided into twelve sections, called the Twelve Interdependent Causes and Effects – 1. ignorance, 2. volitional action or conditioning, 3. consciousness, 4. name and form, 5. six sensory organs (eye, ear, nose, tongue, body and mind), 6. contact or touch, 7. sensation, 8. desire, craving, thirst, 9. grasping, 10. becoming or existence, 11. birth, 12. decay and death. The areas between the six spokes represent the six forms of unenlightened existence. There are six wedged-shaped sections, with each representing a different realm of life – 1. realm of the Gods - Devas (who are blissful but dangerously complacent; always at the top of the wheel) 2. the realm of the titans, demigods and fighting demons - Asuras (lowest rank of gods, who are powerful and wealthy but infected with envy, jealously, and greed for more; always in the upper half of the wheel) 3. the realm of "human beings" (always in the upper half of the wheel) 4. the realm of "animals" (sentient beings, less intellectually advanced than humans, driven by instincts and have little freedom, but can still experience suffering and project karma; always in the bottom half of the wheel; inclusive of birds, fish, and even a worm) 5. the realm of "hungry ghosts" - Pretas (whose huge bellies but pinpoint mouths and eyes suggest insatiable craving; always in the bottom half of the wheel) 6. the realm of "hell beings" (who are consumed with relentless rage; always at the bottom of the wheel; beings brought to hell for past karma, but beings who can escape it through good deeds and reincarnation). At the center or hub of the circle is a smaller circle containing the Three Poisons, within a rim of binary demarcation of black and white. The black section represents the Dark Path on which sentient beings are moving downward to the hellish realms. The white section represents the Path of Bliss on which beings are moving upward to the Godly realms. The Three Poisons are personified as a rooster or fowl, a pig or boar, and a snake, chasing one another around and around. They symbolize the forces that keep people caught up in the samsaric round of existence: the rooster stands for greed, the pig for ignorance or delusion, and the snake for hatred.
