Snub-nosed monkeys are a group of Old World monkeys that make up the entirety of the genus Rhinopithecus. They are known for their distinctive upturned noses and are found in Asia, with a range covering southern China, extending into northern parts of Myanmar and Vietnam. Snub-nosed monkeys inhabit mountain forests up to elevations of more than 4,000 meters (13,000 feet), and they move into the deeply secluded regions during winter. These monkeys have adapted to their cold environment by developing thick fur that provides insulation and by subsisting on low-protein lichens and bark when trees are bare. Snub-nosed monkeys are highly social, forming groups that can range in size from 20 to 70 monkeys during the winter, and up to 600 individuals during the warmer months. They are also very vocal, producing 18 types of calls. The Burmese snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus strykeri), discovered in 2010, is a critically endangered species found in the mountainous regions of Myanmar and China. It is known for its unique upturned nose and aversion to rain. The snub-nosed monkeys face threats from habitat loss due to logging, human settlement, and hunting.
