Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer says he will not resign or set out a timetable for a drawn out leadership contest. But Starmer is being warned by MPs to avoid a leadership battle with Health Secretary Wes Streeting. Streeting will need to reach the threshold of 81 nominations in order to be a candidate for the job. Some of Starmer's loyalist, however, say Streeting doesn't have the right amount of backers.

The Labour NEC must make its view clear now and end the uncertainty. If a leadership contest is triggered, the Labour Party cannot exclude the most popular politician of any political party in the U.K. Andy Burnham also has significant executive experience as a former cabinet minister and successful Metro Mayor. The NEC and PM must be explicit that in the event of a contest Andy Burnham will not be blocked should he stand. This should be decided and communicated now. See my interview from Channel 4 below:

Book the hearse and dig the grave, because Labour are already dead. They’re a spent force, getting heckled by the working-class voters they betrayed wherever they go. Andy Burnham can’t reverse their misfortunes. Starmer taints everything he touches, including Burnham’s bid to become MP for Makerfield in the upcoming by-election. Even if Burnham wins and becomes Prime Minister, he won’t reverse mass migration. There is no fiscal headroom for his infrastructure projects and plans to nationalise key industries. The IMF has warned that no more revenue can be raised from raising taxes, and that the bond markets Burnham would rather ignore are on the brink of insolvency. So I don’t buy the polling that says Burnham could win a majority at the next general election. If he enters government, he will be bound by the same fiscal constraints, working with the same system, and have a Cabinet full of the same inadequate Ministers as Starmer has. It doesn’t matter whether Wes Streeting, Angela Rayner, Burnham, Starmer, or Larry the Cat are holding the poisoned chalice in 2029. This will be the last Labour government. The battle now is for who succeeds them.

He just doesn't think that now is the time * Nigel Farage £5million 'gift' from Christopher Harborne, a British crypto billionaire based in Thailand, remains an issue. Farage insists it is his money and he can spend it as he wishes. But the Tories have referred it to the standards commissioner and the electoral commission. *This could have a long tail, particularly over claims it is a conflict of interest given Farage's promotion of cryptocurrency. This is categorically denied by Reform UK * Is some of the sheen coming off Zack Polanski? Thursday will be a breakthrough night for them, but polling suggests that he has dropped 14 points in favourability in the space of a week since row over Golders Green suspect. He's still far more popular than the PM, but it is a significant move

I was in Makerfield on a couple of occasions. I’m delighted Andy Burnham won the by-election and he will be a great MP and voice for Labour. Outside of Westminster, everyone I speak to cannot get their head around the idea of changing Prime Ministers now - especially after the Tory leadership chaos they voted for Keir Starmer and The Labour Party to draw a line under. It’s time to unite and get on with governing the country. 🇬🇧

Parsi: There is no doubt that we have now, after 20 years of hearing from the hawks, that the only solution is to go to war, we tried it. One third of the U.S. Navy was there in the region. This was not a small operation. This was a major operation short of an actual invasion, and it failed. There is just no doubt that the military operation was not a success. And hopefully, at a minimum, we will not be having that debate again. It has now been settled. It's no longer a theoretical or academic topic. It has been tried, proven to be a failure.
