Okay so I have a tip if your dogs are killing your chickens 🐔 Full disclaimer this was passed on an old farmer from the Netherlands. Okay if your dog is repeatedly killing your chickens take the body of one and attach it to dog tied off for a few hours. I know it's awful, but it works! My dog killed 5 of my kid's birds and I remembered it one day admits sobs from kids. Tied dog off for a bit and attached bird to him. Never again did he harm a chicken. Sorry to be so morbid on such a sweet post but I know others have dealt with this before .

This is not really a good idea. It’s literally disorienting the chicken and it passes out lol.

I used to put chickens asleep when I was a kid, I would scatter them all over the yard and my mom would come out and think they were dead.

Grok: While tonic immobility (often called "chicken hypnosis") is a natural defensive response in birds, inducing it manually—as shown in the X post—does involve triggering a fear-based freeze state where the chicken perceives a threat to its life. This can cause acute stress, elevating heart rate and cortisol levels, though it's typically short-term and reversible without lasting physical harm in a single instance. Repeated or prolonged induction, however, may contribute to chronic stress, potentially affecting the bird's immune system, behavior, and overall welfare, as studies link higher fear responses (measured by TI duration) to altered immunity and gut microbiota. From an animal welfare perspective, it's generally considered unnecessary and unethical for entertainment or non-essential purposes, as it mimics predation fear without benefit to the chicken. In farming or research contexts, it's sometimes used sparingly to assess fearfulness, but gentler handling alternatives are recommended to minimize distress.

you can do it easier. Put them on the ground hold them close to the ground with one hand and draw a line in the dirt vertical to their head. I have chickens its pretty weird. there's another way you can do it while they're on their backs too.

Works with cocks too! Tuck the head in a tight warm corner and spin it around a few times, and it goes to sleep afterwards.

its called tonic immobility. work on lots of species - you don’t have to whirl the chicken just put her on her back and hold her there a few seconds

Buddy said when he was Amish. @grok Once your Amish can you stop being Amish at anytime? Or are you locked in for life?🤔

The chicken is playing possum, not alseep. 🤦‍♀️ When an animal catches them, they will shake them around like this. Going limp makes it more likely an animal will drop its prey b/c it’s no longer moving.

I have so many questions. Is this better or healthier for the chicken? Do they get more rest from it then just chirping away all night? Does putting them to sleep that way leave them as sitting ducks for any intruders? How many hours do they sleep? Can they self awake or do they need to be woken up? Can they lay an egg while asleep? 😂 @gork support with these questions in relation to the above video.

You don’t need to wave it around. Just hold it still for about 5-7 secs and it’ll go to sleep. The Amish didn’t invent it by the way.

I’m curious how long they would sleep if you put them in the spin cycle of a washing machine?

This is a well known fact. You can do that, stand them up and draw a line in the sand and they are hypnotized.

I would assume if someone took my head and tucked it under my arm, there may be some blood flow that gets cut off from my brain…which maybe just maybe could lead to unconsciousness especially if I was left in that position and then spun around in circles like I was on the Scat.

She’s not sleeping, you knucklehead! What you’ve done is made her dizzy and she’s probably scared half to death! How about we wrap your head up and spin you around a few times? Maybe then you’ll be ready for a nap? Maybe then you’ll grow a brain cell?!
