🥹 So, it all ends for Andy Murray next week. 🧵 Time for a thread, me thinks, starting with the point I'll probably remember most from his remarkable career - the Davis Cup clincher from 2015...

I think that clip sums Murray up perfectly - the ability to grind; to turn defence into attack; to execute the most majestic of shots. That season, Murray became the only man to win 11 live rubbers and stay unbeaten in a Davis Cup title-winning campaign.

Murray will end his career with: ✅ 3 Grand Slam singles titles 👏 14 at Masters 1000 level 🏆 46 ATP titles in total 👀 Unless of course, he does the unthinkable in Paris…

It is just shy of 20 years since a 17-year-old Murray won the US Open boys’ singles - maybe this was the first time you heard his name.

If not, maybe it was at Queen’s Club in 2005 when he toyed with former Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson before finally injury cost him. It resulted in the famous ankle brace being applied for the rest of his career.

Murray has only ever lost one match from two sets up – against @nalbandiandavid at Wimbledon in 2005.

Hope you aren’t eating - here’s a famous photo of Murray at the 2005 US Open. He still beat Andrei Pavel though. Of course he did.

One of the great Murray memories – his celebration as a famous Wimbledon comeback began against Richard Gasquet. Murray won from two sets down, a feat he has managed on a record 11 occasions in total.

🤣 I was on Centre Court that day and the couple in front of me left just before Gasquet stepped up to serve for the match at 5-4 in the third set. 👊 A reminder – never count Andy Murray out!

Another famous moment – Murray beating Rafael Nadal at the 2008 US Open to reach his first Grand Slam final. The video would be better with the famous @_markpetchey commentary on @SkySportsTennis - ‘He’s done it, he’s in the final!’ - but there you go.

Just throwing in some Andy Murray greatness here from the 2010 Australian Open.

Murray lost his first four Grand Slam finals but was this the day that changed it all? Just a month after losing to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final, Murray lost just seven games in defeating the Swiss to win Olympic gold.

A few weeks later, Murray ended the 76-year wait for a British Grand Slam men’s singles champion. There was drama, of course. A two-set lead blown against Novak Djokovic, a talk to himself in a bathroom mirror and, finally, after 4 hrs 54 mins, this…

The title at Wimbledon 2013 – 77 years after Fred Perry had been the last Briton to lift the famous trophy – will probably be the defining moment of Murray’s career. Who remembers *that* epic final game?

When Murray reached the 2016 French Open final, he became one of only 10 men to play in all four Grand Slam finals.

A few weeks later, he beat Milos Raonic in straight sets to win Wimbledon for a second time. It was the only Grand Slam final in which he didn’t face either Federer or Djokovic – and would prove to be his last.

Murray swept all before him in the second half of 2016, becoming the only singles player, male or female, to win consecutive Olympic gold medals.

At the 2016 ATP Finals, Murray beat Djokovic in the title match to claim the world number one ranking for the first time. The celebration matched his achievement. He would hold top spot for 41 weeks – that’s longer than greats Boris Becker, Ilie Nastase and Mats Wilander.

Murray retained his BBC Sports Personality of the Year crown in 2016, winning the award for a third time. He is the only athlete to win it 3 times and also the only one to win it back-to-back.

But injury would bring the era of success to an end. In the @PrimeVideo documentary, Resurfacing, a tearful Murray said: ‘I really want to keep going but my body is telling me ‘no’.’ Sadly, Elon has deleted so many archived videos so only a pic!

Major hip surgery was required but the warrior in Murray would not be stopped. Incredibly, he not only returned to action but won ATP title number 46 in Antwerp in 2019!

Still, the light was fading – although there were still flashes of brilliance and, perhaps more importantly, shows of defiance and utter determination – arguably Murray’s greatest quality...

At the 2023 Australian Open came an epic win from two-sets down against Thanasi Kokkinakis. It was Murray’s 11th victory from two sets down – a record – and, at 5 hours 45 minutes, the longest match of his career. It finished at 4.05am!

Murray won 200 Grand Slam singles matches in his career, putting him ninth on the all-time list with only these legends above him: Djokovic, Federer, Nadal, Connors, Agassi, Lendl, Emerson, Sampras #NotBad

Murray has posted 739 tour-level match wins – easily the most ever by a Briton. For some perspective, Tim Henman sits next on that list with 496. He won a personal-best 28 matches in a row in late 2016/early 2017.

Murray reached 11 Grand Slam finals – one more than the tally of the next-best Briton, Fred Perry, the man whose clothing line the Scot used to wear.

And one remarkable stat I left out too: From August 2015 to June 2017, Murray broke serve in 136 consecutive matches. One of the great returners.
