"So it's a private thing. Something I wouldn't understand." I was already riveted by this scene bc of how E.Dulau hinted at Kleya's inner world through her delivery, but with the context of #Andor's final arc it's astounding how much the REAL Kleya actually reveals herself here🧵

After Cass announces he is done with the Rebellion, Kleya challenges him on that but she does so calmly, collected as always. But then, Cass says: "He'll know what it means." This triggers something in Kleya. Her reaction is unlike anything we've seen from her up to this point🧵

She's out of focus but look at that bitter smile. There is an Anger to her that seeps through her voice. She's scornful of Cassian's implications that only Luthen, not her, may understand what he's feeling. Bc as we come to discover, NO ONE understands this better than Kleya🧵

Cassian is traumatized by what happened on Ghorman. He witnessed and barely escaped a massacre. It has scarred him to the point he just wants to give it all up. It's understandable. It's a crushing weight. Turns out, Kleya's been carrying that very weight since she was a child🧵

She survived the massacre of her family + people. She lost everything to an atrocity like the one that shocked Cass, spent 17 years watching the Empire commit more atrocities, amassing losses bc there's no other way to win. In a way, she died too. Kleya isn't even her real name🧵

She knows in her bones how hard it is. Which is exactly why being 'done' is unfathomable to her. She reminds Cass that he's a survivor, bc she is one. "ONE would think there'd be no stopping you." SHE thinks this bc that brutality radicalized her, it made her who she is🧵

Kleya refuses to turn a blind eye to the evil of the Empire. She walks towards it and faces it, no matter how painful it is, and BECAUSE it is so painful. It's a reminder. What happened to her is going to keep happening. Under the boot of the Empire, peace is inconceivable.🧵

In 209 Cassian argues against the idea of dying in this fight. He wants a future. Kleya doesn't have that. She's made herself into an entirely selfless being, which I mean here as the destruction of self. There is only the Cause for her bc everything else was ripped away🧵

No personal desires, hopes, fears matter. She has tethered herself to this fight. The one person she loves, she loves despite herself bc he took part in the atrocity that defined her. She makes Luthen sharpen her into a blade. Who she was, or who she might've been, is gone🧵

It's why she is so resistant when Cassian comes rescue her. Whether she wanted it or not, Luthen was all she had. Having lost him, and delivered the intel, why would she live? She spent her whole life not thinking of herself as an individual, why would anyone want to save HER?🧵

Kleya projected an image of cold control, down to her pin straight hair (we see that her natural hair is wavier). She needed an armor to keep at bay the pain and grief that made Cassian want to be done, which for her are ever-present. When she no longer could, it splintered her🧵

Ultimately, Kleya is a survivor. She survived her family, the genocide of her people. She survived Luthen. In the end, she survives Cassian too. It's a burden she's going to carry forever. But she gets to live. Whether she wanted it or not, she has a future🧵

There's a quote from a certain famous show that I love very much. "The hardest thing in this world is to live in it. Be brave. Live." That sums up Kleya pretty well to me.
