I remember it being totally normal to see kids with broken arms, casts. It was no big deal. You just signed them.

Don’t forget the rickety forts we built in trees or digging caves under big piles of dirt. Riding horses or motor bikes all over Kingdom come, into the deep, dark woods or on the sides of roads with dump trucks roaring inches by. Hiding from the older “bad boys” in the neighborhood or the collie that tried to murder us every time we rode our bikes by her house. Good times.

I was born in 1970. No lies detected. My buddies parents had a dinner bell on a post in the back yard they would ring when dinner was ready. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Ahhhh.. the good ol’ days! I’d trade years of this new world for one day back then.

I grew up with all of that! Playing cards on the bike spokes, tree forts we'd build in the woods and defend our turf with black walnuts in the late summer. That was something you wanted to dodge!

Love this..I was like 10 riding ofc a crappy 10 speed and my friends decided to build that ramp but it was down a steep gravel road..lol. Ofc I literally flew off my bike …landed on my head..couldn’t see for a good 1-2 minutes…so what did we do? Lowered the angle of the ramp lol.

You spent more time in other peoples houses than yours, You learnt to maintain your own bike, repair punctures, fix chains, swap breaks, it was your vehicle to everywhere. Freedom to understand risk and reward.

Used to live on a road that had the PERFECT bumps so when you hit it just right, you felt like your stomach turned inside out. Told Dad to floor it everytime and he did!🤣 Dangerous yes… Fun memory, hell yes.

This is the America I grew up in, and I survived. I was one of those children who dressed in camouflage, went into the woods, and shot at each other with BB guns. Today's children couldn't carry our bath water, and it shows every day!

The worst part about scraping your knee or whatever was when mom would bring out the iodine.

@4thOfJuly365 I sure do miss those days. We’d take our station wagon to the drive in movies. We wore our pajamas lol. Pillows and blankets set up in the back. We were set! Good old days!

As someone who spent a good deal of time in the 70's in a bomb shelter playing spy games with fireworks, I approve of this post.

The way I grew up. I remember while in primary school when we got home evenings we used to get a spanking from mother for something stupid we did like skipping school homework, torn clothes, extremely dirty and neighbours 'reports'. When she didn't we new bad shit was coming as she told us this particular time she was leaving it for dad to take care of when he gets home ...and he did, but he always gave us a lecture explained why. None of us were ever needed to be disciplined at high school as by that time we knew better. 'Those were the days my friend, we wished it would never end'

That mom arm instinct never goes away. Mine still activates even when there's nobody in the passenger seat.

In the good old days, wearing a bicycle helmet was enough to get you mercilessly mocked.

Yeah the weird lady in the house behind the corner store got me with the wooden spoon once. That’s not just fictional.

Not only were we better off, but society was better off because children didn't grow up crying about every minor incident. We were tougher, smarter, and better adjusted than any child of a helicopter parent.

We would hunt coke bottles (3 cents), to buy gas for the lawn mower and hit the streets for $3 front yard $5 front and back. No permit just initiative.

I grew up like this, and I’m a mom now. I want to know what happened and why I’m too chicken to let my child be this free. What changed? Fear mongering? Actual fear? More danger?

And we made it. Respectful to each other AND our elders. Ride bikes all over town, and knew when it was time to get home, because you knew mom had supper ready and dad expected you to be around the table when he sat down to eat. If the phone rang while eating, we didn’t pick up.

Born 1963. I climbed high into trees to hang out. Kickball in the middle of the street until dark. Seeing who could jump the farthest off the dugout. Building go-carts and racing down our hill without brakes. Roller skating. Jumping into leaf piles. Back flips off the high dive.
