I'm open to fe and a LOT of the ball model doesn't make sense to me. This however can be explained in the ball model by the sun being MUCH FURTHER away than the moon. In this case the sun could be further away making it "higher" than the moon, with that angle we only see 1/2 moon

“Teachers” taught us in public schools that it takes 6-7 years for light from the sun to travel to earth. I could tell from sun rays and the angles that the sun wasn’t as far away as I was originally taught.

Took me less than a minute to record that, YES, the sun, a single light source at the center of the solar system, is illuminating the earth and moon...space is just really really really big...and as you can see, the optics only work out in the case of spherical bodies
