So... Vertical tabs are out in Chrome. I thought it would make me switch back to it, I really thought it was the one thing I needed in Chrome. I currently use Dia , but here's the thing. In comparison, the implementation of vertical tabs in Chrome is just... awful. It barely changed since I saw it in beta. I thought it would greatly improve during the beta phase, but it did not. So here's everything I dislike about it compared to Dia: 1. It's super laggy. 2. When collapsed, the sidebar moves down, meaning the position of the expand/collapse button shifts down too, making it much harder to find. (I ironically couldn't find the first few seconds of the video specifically because of that) 3. No keyboard shortcut to expand/collapse. 4. Collapsed doesn't move the tabs out of view, they are just tiny. 5. The amount of tabs per line in the grid of pinned tabs is not adjusted depending on the number of tabs. 6. In collapsed mode, all the pinned tabs are now in a column, which can push the actual tabs quite far down. ----- It's just awful. It was built into Chrome as a way to just say "hey we also have vertical tabs!" But the UX is simply awful. This has to be the worst implementation of vertical tabs I've seen so far yet, sadly. The benefits of switching between horizontal → vertical tabs are underrated. For the Superlogical multiplexer macOS client, both tab styles are great for very different working styles. For me, horizontal tabs are great for more focussed projects or tasks. I'll open a repo, spawn a few tabs with lazygit, a couple agents etc, and live in that for a while. Vertical tabs however, span sessions and even machines - much better for monitoring existing workloads, disparate agent runs and the like. Operator mode. Still quite early wip stuff but already a delight to use.

X is finally rolling out the redesign of profiles and tabs! 🔥 The classic blue is gone, active tabs now highlight in black or white, with icons appearing next to the active tab name. You’ll also feel satisfying haptics every time you switch tabs. Profiles just got a lot cleaner: tabs have been replaced by icons, reducing visual clutter. The collections have grown so much over the years that we just needed to do a makeover so we can fit all of our items on the home page and make it look more pretty~ Also a sneak peek of our mascot Baby Finn the Giraffe making a comeback! You may not know this about me. During COVID I attempted for 3 years to build a bridge from the farm gate to the local town. We were the center of the plate of many local restaurants, as well as portioned controlled meats for major food distributors. We went from 6 to 46 employees 20k a month to 800k/month. But it didn't just take my 46... it took a constellation of other people filling in the gaps. Tearing it down was just as much work as building it. I am proud of where I stand now with everyone involved. I grew more with that storm. For a while I was embarrassed that I couldn't make this thing run forward. Today I want to facilitate whatever it takes to pick up the pieces of what I learned to help whoever it is that wants to be part of the change in direction. I don't want to own the damn thing. I want to find the missing pieces of the puzzle so we can build back better.

I used a similar technique recently to reverse engineer the beautiful tabs in OpenAI ‘s Atlas browser. Took a screen recording, had an agent describe the design, the tab metrics, the easing curves etc. Had Codex do one pass and have Claude critique it, and got this highly responsive, pretty well structured macOS component out of it

Reading the comments on this post told me everything I need to know about art. So many of you wrote to say you felt the exact same thing I did standing in front of the Starry Night. That strange pull, the sense that the painting is somehow alive... It turns out the feeling is completely universal. I am not someone who gets emotional easily. But every so often a piece of art really gets to me. And that is exactly what happened the first time i walked up to Van Gogh's magnum opus. I know how that sounds, it is one of the most famous paintings on earth, almost a cliché to be moved by it. But maybe it is that famous for a reason... It genuinely looks like it is moving while you stand there, shifting in a way I cannot explain and have never seen in any of the thousands of paintings I have looked at in my life. The same day I took the photo below, I also filmed this short video. It still comes nowhere near the real thing, but you can at least catch a little more of it here, the thick ridges of paint, the way the stars and swirls lift right off the canvas. This technique is called "impasto", from the Italian for mixture. It means paint laid on so thickly that every brushstroke and ridge stays visible on the surface. Van Gogh piled it on with a loaded brush, building the stars up thick so they would blaze as bright as possible against the dark. But no video and no explanation of technique can really convey what it feels like to stand in front of it. And the fact that so many of you felt the very same thing says something true about what art is really for. Tolstoy said it best: "The receiver of a true artistic impression is so united to the artist that he feels as if the work were his own and not someone else’s, as if what it expresses were just what he had long been wishing to express. A real work of art destroys, in the consciousness of the receiver, the separation between himself and the artist. In this uniting of it with others lies the great attractive force of art."

While I have premium I definitely want to do a long post breaking down the main scene from this show that I obsess with. There's so much that I feel could be learned from it. Not just for expansion animators either. There's honestly a LOT that can be learned from how this show directed its expansion scenes that can be applied to even safe for work animations. Obviously yes, the expansion alone is really good. What makes it so good though is just the fact that there's things you pick up on that you likely don't even realize until you re-watch. I'm using this scene as an example as it's not AS good I would say, but it still has a lot going for it. One thing I've always loved from it that I want to use in my own animations someday is that the expansion sort of comes in waves as opposed to one consistent growth. In a way, it makes it feel more natural while also selling how tight the top is getting. It could have been accompanied by showing the knot getting tighter or smaller with each growth. It's a small part of the animation but just that one thing already adds another layer to appreciate. It's not like most expansion scenes where there's very little outside of just "growing" on its own. There's a bunch of little things that subtly improve it without being obnoxious. The first expansion scene has WAY more that I want to talk about honestly. Far more than this one has. It will probably be a really long post now that I think about it...

This is TOO much of a coincidence! I just spotted a Cybercab in my college apartment parking garage in College Station,TX exactly where the critical disengagement in the quote below occured... (FSD v14.3.7 attempted to drive off the 6th floor of a parking garage). I first saw it outside my apartment, then I saw it INSIDE the apartment on the 6th floor of the garage. That is exactly where the incident occured, and it was parked a couple parking spots away from where I disengaged. 👀 I can only assume this is Tesla AI investigating this situation closely as it could be dangerous. It is also really impressive that they are on the case within 2 days of it happening, in a college town a couple hours from Houston and Austin. I am super happy to see this Tesla, thank you. Even if it is a coincidence, I like to see testing in College Station, the home of the Aggies! 👍 The Cybercab is shown in the aparment garage and outside the apartment when I first spotted it:

Critical Disengagement on FSD v14.3.7. Context: The car needed to leave the parking garage and go to HEB. It started from the second floor, made its way to the top floor, and I believe it tried to find a path through this metal wire fence. If it had gone through that, it was a 6 story drop to the ground. In the dashcam clip, it is clearly visible. You can see the car is at 4 mph throughout the whole turn and is not slowing down. It wasn't trying to park because the route was set to leave the parking garage, not park in it. Either way, driving at 4 mph inches from the fencing is not okay. I have an interior GoPro recording of the whole situation. It actually tried to drive into the fencing again after I restarted FSD. In thread 👇 Obviously since I disengaged, we don't know what it truly would have done. Maybe it would have made contact and stopped. This was as far as I was going to take it as someone responsible for the vehicle, so I believe this disengagement was fair. Sure, but the idea of simplifying the appearance of Fortnite, the locker and the shop are all going in the exact opposite direction of simplicity. Equipping cosmetics takes double, if not triple the clicks. The UI is impractical and janky, not to mention the introduction of buttons and drop-down menus that were far easier to access previously. Selecting a skin to rotate it, preview it or even spin it around now requires clicking on it, which then applies it to your loadout. Previously this needed a confirm button so you could preview and choose skins, backblings etc without loosing your currently equipped on if you want to go back. Wraps are not included as part of a character's preset despite being completely relevant to the skin worn. Changing emotes, lobby tracks, and all cosmetics now means you have to back out and change tabs, something that could have previously been done on 1 page. The sectioned tabs make sense with new types like LEGO Kits, Cars, Instruments but there's no need to separate Character from Wraps, Emotes or Lobby. Archiving or Favoriting items can no longer be done in batches or quickly. Previously all you had to do was click once per cosmetic on the button but now you have to enter a drop down and select it for every individual item. Applying wraps to all slots now requires a drop down menu rather than simply clicking the button at the bottom. Swinging a pickaxe or redeploying a glider is near impossible to do and feels like more of a chore to actually accomplish with the drop-down menu. It overlays onto other items meaning as soon as it's clicked the menu vanishes and switches to another cosmetic before the animation can even begin. Cosmetics in the locker can be searched by seasons using "S1-17" but after S18+ they no longer filter. Entering the drop-down menu or right-clicking anything in the locker accidentally immediately takes you all the way back to your currently equipped item when exiting. The filter menu requires an "apply" button to be pressed rather than simply closing and applying when selecting one of the filters, taking longer and more clicks to simply find your recent items or remove a filter. The filter menu was also better as a side panel so you don't have to move your cursor to the center of the screen and back every single time. As a side panel it also allowed for more options to be displayed, whereas the current one requires a huge scroll bar to simply filter by favorite. The presets menu scroll wheel also zooms the skins in and out as you scroll up and down the list. Because of the randomize preset button, the list compared to when saving a preset is all moved up by 1, becoming disorientating to where the preset was in relation to the rows. The shop no longer displays item descriptions or set names on cosmetics - now requiring a click on each individual item when there is adequate space to do so. The new shop and locker appearance can be accustomed to, however, it NEEDS the basic functionality and user-friendly UI elements that the previous ones had. Simple buttons at the bottom to favorite, swing, redeploy and equip. Less tabs to switch between, less clicks required to complete simple tasks and less feeling like there's a battle against the UI itself just to equip the cosmetics you paid for. We appreciate the moves the renew the locker and shop, but in terms of functionality and user interaction, there is nothing we want more than the old one back or the old one's elements merged into the new appearance.
