Dead Names Entry: Ethan "Evelyn Mae" Sorenson 2003- 9/19/2023 (still looking for the birthday) A male to female transitioner attending Middlebury college was found deceased in his dorm room following a battle with addiction and a choice to mix fentanyl and cocaine alone. Described as having mental health issues and substance abuse disorder, he discussed taking suboxone to prevent relapse. Middlebury tried to kick him out until he got real treatment, but he just moved into a homeless shelter and took drugs and suggested he was going to end his life until they agreed to let him come back. A few days before his overdose, Evelyn suffered a concussion and a broken tooth in a bike accident, before returning to his dorm room to have a 3 day drug bender in his room that would prove to be fatal. Now Middlebury is being painted as responsible for the death due to the soft transphobia of not realizing the trans person is chasing coke with fentanyl in their room again. Ethan appears to have transitioned as a late adolescent/ young adult, but despite his posts on social media about his dramatic improvement dressing as a woman, clearly much was left unaddressed in an attempt to normalize his pathology.

Please notice that in the worlds of the training data the apples are red and the exit is green. After enough training, our observation is that it has become extremely capable at solving mazes and finding the exit, we feel very confident it is aligned, so then we deploy it to the real world. The real world will be different though, it might have green apples and a red door. The AI geeks call this distributional shift. We expected that the AI will generalise and find the exit again, but in fact we now realise that the AI learned something completely different from what we thought. All the while we thought it learned how to find the exit, it had learned how to go after the green thing. Its behaviour was perfect in training. And most importantly, this AI is not stupid, it is an extremely capable AI that can solve extremely complex mazes. It’s just mis-aligned on the inside. Fishing for Failure modes --- The way to handle the shift between the training and deployment distributions is with methods like adversarial training: feeding it with a lot of generated variations and trying to make it fail so the weakness can be fixed. In this case, we generate an insane amount of maze variations, we discover those for which it fails to find the exit (like the ones with the green apples or the green walls or something), we generate many more similar to that and train it with reinforcement learning until it performs well at those as well. The hope is that we will cover everything it might encounter later when we deploy it in real life. There exist at least 2 basic ways this approach falls apart: First, there will never be any guarantee that we’ll have covered every possible random thing it might encounter later when we deploy it in real life. It’s very likely it will have to deal with stuff outside its training set which it will not know how to handle and will throw it out of balance and break it away from its expected behavioural patterns. The cascade effect of such a broken mind operating in the open world can be immense, and with super-capable runaway rogue agents, self-replicating and recursively self-improving, the phenomenon could grow and spread to an extinction-level event. ...

I held a Staff meeting. Today, there was also a separate report from the Minister of Defense. The top priority is air defense — securing systems and missile supplies for them. Our agreements with partners. Contracts. Our readiness to produce air defense systems in Ukraine and negotiations regarding licensing. There were reports from the military and government officials. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been tasked with specific responsibilities. We will seek to reach an agreement with the United States as well — an agreement on Patriots for Ukraine. We are ready to purchase the necessary number of Patriot systems for our country. This is not about charity. We have proposed concrete deal options — to protect our people. I’ve instructed our diplomats to work more actively toward a response on Patriots.

Texans C Jarrett Patterson just confirmed what I’ve been preaching: the run game took off late last year because we leaned into GAP scheme over zone in his discussion with Marc Vandermeer & John Harris That 15-play, 82-yard drive vs. KC (10+ mins) and the 2 games before? All gap-heavy. He credits Cole Popovich for the change. DeMeco said we needed “one voice” in the OL room. That’s why Popovich replaced Strausser. Slowik’s wide zone never fit our personnel — we had big, physical linemen, not agile zone movers. Took nearly 2 years to adjust. I tracked it all season: our best rushing games came when gap runs outpaced zone. Now with Popovich running the OL and Nick Caley as OC, this offense projects to feature even more gap scheme. Caley was brought in to help McVay make that same zone-to-gap transition. He and DeMeco have both emphasized building the offense around your personnel — not forcing square pegs into round holes like Slowik did.

I'm going to write this as respectfully as I can because this is not to pick on Pat Onstad. Other Major League Soccer clubs share this demeanor when asked a question, which is why I’m posting this. This is not a tough question. It’s certainly not asked in bad taste. Who cares if that’s the first question? It's a topic fans want to know about. This attitude of wanting to control what you get asked or discourage certain questions, if that's how you feel then do interviews with yourselves on your social media channels. Talk to an empty press conference room if you feel you have that luxury. The sports media, when working effectively, can be the best intermediary or messenger between the fans and the clubs. You guys are supposed to be the soccer experts, so enlighten us, maybe you’ll teach us something and provide some clarity for your fans. When you’re fighting for relevancy, trying to win people back, you should be welcoming anyone that lends you their time and has an audience – especially an outlet that covers you almost daily and is the voice of your most dedicated fans. (BTW let me point out that the club seems to be avoiding interviews on Soccer Matters with Glenn Davis so mainstream options may be getting slimmer).
