Waiting for boomers to reply

We earned that money. If the government had let us keep it and invest it ourselves in the stock market, we'd be even richer.

While I agree with you in principle, since my tax dollars have been wasted and stolen without remorse or recompense while being perpetually belittled and battered for working hard to become successful and constantly told to suck it up, I want every single last Social Security penny. Every. Last. One.

I have ZERO SYMPATHY for boomers worried about SSA. Ross Perot was screaming about the consequences of doing nothing about government spending and the accounting behind the system back in 1992. I was twelve and understood the points he was making…

Matt, you are playing into the psyop! This whole anti-boomer thing reeks of class warfare! That net worth is typically tied up in hosing that was paid for over decades. When 'they' were under 35, no one had a net worth of anything back then either. BTW, what was your net worth at 35? I suspect much larger than 99% of any generation. So, sure you can give up your social security that means nothing to you and your kids and your kids kids, you have that kind of wealth. You speak as if it would be a sacrifice for you....it would not. But for many, it would be the difference in independent aging or burdening kids and grandkids with care cost. That savings....gone in 6 months once a major medical issue comes up. So no, the social security is not a retirement plan. The social security means you can rely on the giant swath of money you've saved to get through the looming medical requirement of aging and not burden the younger generation.

I have zero sympathy for the average Boomer on this. They should know the moment their money was taken, it was spent, and they should have been taking actions to end this program for the next generation. Where Boomers and Gen X won't make the sacrifice, Millenials likely will.

Make Congress give up their pensions. They screwed up and let ss get rampant with fraud. SS can go, but at least give us what we paid into it. Gen X has been screwed over enough.

The older generations spent decades paying into the system through forced payroll deductions under the assumption that a certain sum would be paid upon their retirement. It is not the younger generation’s money. The system is flawed, but don’t shift the blame to the millions of forced participants who had no choice. The post shows the host’s utter ignorance on this subject or he has other motives. This narrative is toxic in that it drives a wedge between generations. Lastly, the “net worth” argument is ridiculous: can anyone point to a period in the modern age when a 35-year old has the same to close to the net worth of a 65-year old!

Matt Walsh, sitting on a media salary most retirees will never see, has decided the program people were forced to fund for forty years is “perverse” because the average senior household looks richer on paper. That average is mostly home equity and a lifetime of mandatory payroll taxes that never earned a real return. Liquid cash for groceries is a different story. “Just phase it out over 25 years” is a comfortable line when your kids won’t be eating the difference and your own check arrives long after the cameras stop rolling. The people who already paid in get told their bargain was a scam the moment the math gets ugly for everyone else. Bold stance from the guy who never had the option of opting out himself.

Funny game you’re playing here via waging class warfare you dirty evil weasel… Why are you in favor of theft and filching people’s money by clawing back benefits, the venal politicians who frittered away the money should be held to account and flogged in the public milieu; the liberals who promised a big welfare state as well as the republicans who advocated for endless foreign adventures 🤦‍♂️ abolish the central bank federal reserve and Privatize social security. There, I fixed it for you.

Average baby boomer has $430k and you want to cut social security? Bro they will all be out of money in no time at all and then completely destitute. You’re gonna have a lot bigger problems than 6.2% coming out of your paycheck

I’m a boomer who would agree to phase out the Ponzi scheme. The problem is that I paid in over $300K over 47 years so expecting me not to get at a minimum what I paid in is absurd particularly considering there’s a large percentage of people getting SS who paid little to nothing.

Profilbild von Doug

Your thesis is flawed. Even if you cut all SS and Medicare tax tomorrow, the government will compensate with a new tax. That’s because that money doesn’t go into some magic lock box; it goes to congress to appropriate, abuse and steal. They will never tax you less, but if you get rid of a tax that is said to pay for SS, then you will get nothing and it’s your fault.

My net worth is decent because I bought a dump of a house and spent the last 13 years fixing it up. When I die my children will inherit it. Should I commit suicide so they can get their inheritance now? Personally, I would rather they be a bit patient - if that's okay with you. End my Social Security benefits now and that could force me to obtain a reverse mortgage. Depending on how long I live, my children could then end up with no inheritance. I suspect my tax-paying children would prefer things as they stand now. (For the record, their homes are worth more than mine, and their mortgage rates are lower than what mine were.) Your mileage may differ.

It's an asinine point Matt. My net worth at 70 is astronomically higher than it was at 35 years old.... Because it was near zero at 35. Lot's a reasons, including some bad choices, but the point is that retired compared to 35yo net worth is not a useful metric at all. It's dumb

Hmmm... older people worked an entire career so now they have more than young people? Did you need a calculator to figure that out? They had their money (12%+) confiscated across their lifetimes, unable to invest any of it at 4%. Instead they were told to plan for something there for them in retirement, but not near the millions you want the young of today to be gifted at life's end. You sound like a democrat fan boy championing redistribution of money to those who didn't earn it. By the way, seniors cannot earn more as their careers are over. Way to champion kicking people on their way out!

Nobody that receives money for survival, from the government, should be permitted to vote. Welfare, SS, even if you're on unemployment at the time. Why does it make sense for the people receiving money get to vote for them to get more money? NO part of that makes sense. Right?

Not only are YOU the employee paying but equally, so is your EMPLOYER. That combined amount is 12.4 % of your income. Half of it is hidden from you but still factors into your employer’s cost for your labor. Do you not think that this money should pass through to your wages, instead of being siphoned off by the gov’t? Do you not think that this significant pay bump could very much be better spent earlier in your life - when you are working and struggling to afford a first home and starting a family - than at the end of it?

How about tieing it to net worth. Was it not intended to take care of widows and disabled who had nothing left? Like after the wars? A "social security" net to catch those at the bottom from dieing? And since the money was never invested, wasn't it always a ponzi scheme that relied on a growing number of contributers.

Matt Walsh moralizing and his “let them eat cake” tip toeing into class and generational division is the most disappointing thing I’ve found on X. He’s gone from disdain to sloppy math looking for an angle. My gift to my kids? I taught them to meet their obligations.
