Rent freezes are another example of the government stepping in and trying to fix the symptom and not the problem. Rent doesn't go up because every landlord is a greedy bastard. It usually goes up because the cost of owning and insuring and maintaining the house goes up. Property taxes, too. Imagine if the government focused on addressing that to make life easier for everyone, instead of putting a band aid on a gaping hole.

I remember the story told by my parents. My parents must wait for the state-owned factory to assign them an apartment because they get married in China. By rule they were supposed to get one but they had to bribe to get a slightly bigger one and to get it sooner.
