Councillor Schmidt said the following to Novara Media: " I really respect my Labour Party colleagues and listen, there's a lot of hard-working and caring councillors, but what's wrong with the Labour Party really is the national party and the grip it has across local councils. Özel and 90 other legislators formally resigned from the Republican People’s Party, or CHP, after a number of issues. Hundreds of CHP officials and members were jailed after the party won against Erdoğan's AK Party in local elections for the first time in 2024. And a court of appeal annulled a 2023 party congress vote that appointed Özel as CHP chair, citing irregularities.
