Soft Selection visualiser for Blender - I really don't understand why this isn't an option to enable in the Viewport Overlays.

Not to rain on the parade or anything but this is just proportional editing with flashy lights.

Wrong. It's just a gradient visual to show the falloff of proportional editing just like other 3d modelling software. Not flashy lights.

I like the flashy lights and wish blender had them.

This is more than 10 years old in MODO. Cant believe Blender still dont have it.

Blender does have some pretty good visualisation tools but this is pretty strange to not be standard already

To be honest, blender lacks convinient visializers in general. Debuging GN setups in the viewport is always a struggle for me :(

coming from 3dsmax i wanted this too! managed to find one on git called blenderproportionaleditoroverlay: but the viewport is slow & unusable on denser meshes e.g 80k head model kills it :( yours has more utility - looking forward to trying it, ty!!

Tell us how you are doing this please!

Is it useful tho? Because you can just move your verts around and in realtime just scroll your wheel and see the final geometry adapting which is imo better than having a preview :) And if you don't wanna confirm your change, just RMB click yourself out of the situation.

Definitely useful, it's not always immediately obvious how the falloff is affecting the geometry, so having a clearer view can be effective. It's just not possible right now to integrate it whilst actively pulling around geo, it doesn't refresh the viewport until after the movement is complete iirc

Oh, that's insane. I NEED to see this used on a super dense sculpt.

Is there soft selection in Blender ?

Pilgrim's profile picture
Pilgrim8 months ago

yes but no visualisation like there is in maya/max

khellstr's profile picture

By soft selection, do you mean Proportional Editing?

Pilgrim's profile picture
Pilgrim8 months ago

yep! thats my 3ds max terminology coming through

khellstr's profile picture
khellstr8 months ago

Modos Soft Selection is a different from the proportional edit. Radial Falloff in Modo does what Proportional edit in Blender does.

@ArtOfPilgrim I thought in “connected only” mode blender pe does the same?

khellstr's profile picture
khellstr8 months ago

@ArtOfPilgrim It seems to do exactly that. Nice to know. I'm still quite noob with Blender in many parts :) Making false comments is good way to learn :D I though think that the "Connected Only" is not the best name for that option. As those parts that don't move, are connected, just not...

khellstr's profile picture
khellstr8 months ago

@ArtOfPilgrim ...connected "inside" of the Proportional. I was positively surprised that it worked the way it does. My assumption was that I would demonstrate that it doesn't. I expected it to work only when elements are in different mesh islands.

I wonder if it has been suggested on Blender's website? Would definitely be helpful

Nikita Bukoros's profile picture

I found Blender Proportional Editing quite convenient as it is, but from this video I thought that it would be great to be able to assign vertex group values from this soft selection values directly, instead of just assigning value=1 and then smoothing it in weight paint

MacCoy's profile picture
MacCoy8 months ago

That would be useful and that means it will never happen. 😕

If you use sculpt mode, you'll have very useful brushes for this, such as move and elastic, without worrying about visualization. You can also use masks, since this type of operation isn't done on low-poly meshes.
