How will AI change writing? For clues, look at the current state of software development. Marc Andreessen says: "The new coding interface is you've got your code and a chatbot. The Copilot is reading your code and giving you real-time comments. Or the chatbot is actually writing the code for you, and then you're giving it feedback. We had this old concept in the old days called pair programming, where you'd put two coders together in front of the same keyboard, and they could talk to each other and write code together. But now you're just going to have pair programming happening much more broadly, which is human plus machine. And by the way, this hasn't happened yet, but I think the same thing will happen for every other form of writing. So, if the writing of software is getting automated, those firms will be the first to make adjustments. But on the whole, it seems that the Jevons paradox—which dictates that as the cost of writing software falls, the amount of software written goes up—is actually playing out. If an XYZ company, which is a product company, was spending, say, $100 million on writing software and can now do it for $70 million, they might need to lay off some people; that is their business priority. But if the amount of software written goes up three to four times, the number of software engineers in the ecosystem will not change… This panic and paranoia about massive job losses is something that I think is, at this stage, unfounded.”

Why did spec-driven development never take off - the workflow tools like Amazon’s Kiro or GitHub Workspaces encouraged? dex, founder of HumanLayer: “These projects have a really interesting idea: you maintain a set of specifications for your software, and then you maintain the code itself, and the dream is the coding part is just compiling specs into code. But that part never really materialized. I’m on a GitHub issue in spec kit that’s been open for a year, and every couple of weeks I get a new email on the thread of people complaining about the same problem: I edit my specs and then I edit the code, and the code drifts from the specs. How do I keep the specs up to date as the code is changing? You now have two sources of truth, and it stops being useful. That’s why with RPI (Research, Plan, Implement), the docs are tactical execution docs - I do the research, the plan, the implementation, and I throw the docs out. The next time I need research I just do it from scratch, because tokens are cheap and my time is expensive.”

Here’s the core idea, and it’s honestly wild: Natural language is the new syntax You won’t write code. You’ll describe what you want in plain English. Talking to computers becomes the default programming interface. The end of the “army of developers” No product managers writing specs. No giant dev teams for v1. You describe the app and the AI builds it. The overnight app You explain your idea, go to sleep, and the AI spends the night writing, testing, and wiring everything together. You wake up and the product exists. Coffee optional but recommended ☕ Autonomous software agents For complex systems, AI agents live inside the codebase itself. They crawl the repo, fix bugs, write tests, refactor code, and commit changes on their own. A digital workforce that never sleeps Not copilots. Not autocomplete. Actual agents doing ongoing engineering work without supervision.
