What would it look like to fly past Triton, the largest moon of planet Neptune? Only one spacecraft has ever done this -- and the images of this dramatic encounter have been gathered into a video. In 1989, the Voyager 2 robotic spacecraft shot through the Neptune system with cameras blazing. Triton is slightly smaller than Earth's Moon but has ice volcanoes and a surface rich in frozen nitrogen. The first sequence in the video shows Voyager's approach to Triton, which, with the exception of an overall false green tint, appears in approximately true color. The mysterious cantaloupe terrain seen under the spacecraft soon changed from light to dark, with the terminator of night crossing underneath. Is 3I/ATLAS Planning an Oberth Maneuver? Dr. Avi Loeb believes the upcoming alignment of the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS on October 21, 2025, may be more than a coincidence. As it moves directly behind the Sun, it will disappear from Earth’s telescopes just eight days before reaching its closest approach. Loeb suggests this could be the perfect setup for an Oberth maneuver — a powerful acceleration technique used by spacecraft near massive bodies like the Sun to gain speed. At perihelion on October 29, 3I/ATLAS will be exposed to more than 33 gigawatts of solar energy, nearly a third of the total output of all U.S. nuclear power plants. If it is an artificial craft or mothership, Loeb argues, that energy could be harnessed to power advanced systems — all while remaining hidden from our view. If the object behaves purely according to gravity, it will confirm a natural origin. But any unexplained acceleration or change in trajectory, Loeb warns, “would signal something far more profound.”

I'm excited to announce we have achieved our Tier 1 mission success criteria and have begun gathering a tremendous amount of data on how this brand new spacecraft performs. On March 30th, 13:17:08Z, the Gravitas spacecraft separated from the SpaceX Transporter-16 stack to begin its mission as one of the highest power free-flying satellites ever launched. Immediately after separation, the spacecraft autonomously: - Executed detumbling maneuvers - Established two-way communications with the ground (on our very first ground station pass) - Deployed its 20kW solar arrays - Slewed to a safe and stable attitude to await further ground commands These actions alone are a testament to the incredible work of our in-house engineering, software, and GNC teams to build a robust spacecraft. Since then, our operations team completed all initial system activations and checkouts, confirming the vehicle is in a power positive and thermally stable state with no major anomalies observed at this time. We completed this phase of the mission ahead of schedule. Next up we will be powering up and downlinking data for all payloads aboard the Gravitas spacecraft in support of our customers and partners while continuing to put the spacecraft through its paces. As we noted ahead of launch: The goal of this mission is to experiment and push our systems to the limit to inform future missions. Russian satellites have approached ICEYE spacecraft, which are used to assist the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Sometimes we can all use a little help from a friend. NASA's Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory needs a boost to stay in orbit after almost 22 years of service. This video shows an artist's visualization of the Swift Boost Mission: The Katalyst's LINK spacecraft was launched aboard a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL rocket on July 3 and it is now en route to rendezvous with Swift and boost it to a higher orbit over the course of the next several months. This type of maneuver has never been attempted before. If successful, it will be the technology demonstration of a new key capability to extended the lifetime of spacecraft in low Earth orbit, whose orbits decay over time. Swift has an array of instruments that observe the most energetic explosions in the Universe in gamma-rays, X-rays and ultraviolet, and the unique ability to repoint in their direction within tens of seconds. 2034 Earth–Venus–Mars opportunity looks promising. 10–15 on-orbit refueling operations may be needed to make a crewed ship full. Most can be done at an altitude of 180–200 km, made possible by Starship’s size. The final refueling may be performed at a higher altitude of ~2000 km, just below the Van Allen belt. Earth departure on 2034-08-21 from 2000 km orbit. A Trans-Venus Injection burn of ~3.7 km/s will place the ship on an Earth–Venus–Earth free-return trajectory. Venus flyby is expected on 2034-12-19, 120 days after departure. Two weeks before the encounter, if the mission proceeds as planned, a 25-m/s maneuver will shift the trajectory from Earth-return to Mars-bound. If not, the ship will free return to Earth in September 2035. The Venus gravity assist will send the ship into another Earth free-return trajectory, with Mars flyby around 2035-06-02. One week before reaching Mars, a system health check will determine whether to commit to Mars Orbit Insertion. If it’s GO, a small 10-m/s manuever will put the ship to less than 100 km altitude periapsis. Otherwise, a Mars flyby will lead to an Earth return in May 2036. The ship will enter the Martian atmosphere at about 9.4 km/s, performing an aerobrake to slow to 4.88 km/s and capture into a 100x140000 km, 7-day period high elliptical orbit. At apoapsis, a 50-m/s plane change will align the inclination with Mars’ equator, followed by additional aerobraking to remove about 650 m/s of velocity, placing the spacecraft in a 120x6128 km orbit. A 550-m/s burn at 6128 km altitude will then adjust the trajectory into Phobos orbit. The ship will stay at Phobos for about 7 days. The Mars–Phobos L1 point is only about two miles above Phobos’ surface, and Mars would dominate nearly half the sky, appearing about 80 times larger than the Moon from Earth. The ship will depart for Deimos afterward. Two burns totaling roughly 750 m/s will transfer the ship from Phobos to Deimos. And the ship will stay at Deimos for 7 days more. From Deimos, the ship will raise its apoapsis to form a 20000x140000 km altitude, 7-day orbit, requiring about 420 m/s of delta-v. At apogee, a 50-m/s burn will adjust inclination and lower periapsis to ~500 km for final Trans-Earth Injection. If time and propellant allow, the orbit can be aligned to a polar inclination for Mars ice-cap observations before departure. A Trans-Earth Injection burn at 500 km altitude, requiring 1.5–1.6 km/s of delta-v in early July 2035. If departure on the first days in July, Earth arrival is expected in December 2035. If missed that window, a March 2036 arrival may look more feasible. Nominal mission duration: 490 days, with 30 days in Mars orbit and 14 days at Phobos and Deimos. A Martian Eclipse What's that passing in front of the Sun? It looks like a moon, but it can't be Earth's Moon, because it isn't round. It's the Martian moon Phobos. The featured video was taken from the surface of Mars in 2022 by the Perseverance rover. Phobos, at 11.5 kilometers across, is 150 times smaller than Luna (our moon) in diameter, but also 50 times closer to its parent planet. In fact, Phobos is so close to Mars that it is expected to break up and crash into Mars within the next 50 million years. In the near term, the low orbit of Phobos results in more rapid solar eclipses than seen from Earth. The featured video is shown in real time -- the transit really took about 40 seconds, as shown. THE SOLAR SYSTEM IS OFFICIALLY A HARDWARE STORE: DISMANTLING THE PLANETS TO POWER THE FUTURE The conversation about Dyson Swarms has shifted from science fiction to a logistical reality of "when," not "if". While covering the sun in a solid shell is a structural nightmare, a Dyson Swarm, a network of independent solar collectors, is the pragmatic path to a Type II civilization. Elon accelerated this timeline, suggesting Starship could deploy solar harvesting satellites delivering 100GW per year to Earth orbit within the next four to five years. But if we are talking about a true, star encompassing swarm, the 50 year sprint begins with Mercury as the ultimate sacrificial planet. It is metal rich and sits at the perfect distance from the sun to minimize energy costs for launch. Automated robots would mine Mercury’s crust, refine materials on site, and launch solar panels into a statite orbit using radiation pressure to maintain position. Disassembling just half of Mercury provides enough material for a swarm capturing a billion times more energy than Earth currently receives. Asteroids are the "fantastic food source" for this construction because they are a non starter for gravity wells. Mining an asteroid like 16 Psyche is infinitely more efficient than fighting the gravity of a planet like Jupiter. Most asteroids are already sorted into carbonaceous fuel or nickel iron kits, making them perfect modular factories for solar panels. My guess is we'll probably put the launchpads or the landing pads a little further away, just in case. We're going to need a lot of solar power. Since you can't really walk around on the surface of Mars, at least until Mars is terraformed to be like Earth, you need to walk around with a Mars suit and be initially in kind of glass domes.
