Every embedded engineer should learn how to solder. Soldering is the skill that turns a box of components into a working circuit. It might feel difficult at first, but once you learn the basics, you will be able to repair electronics, assemble PCBs, replace components & build your own hardware from scratch. As you practice, you will naturally gain experience on through-hole and SMD soldering, flux, solder wire, solder paste, desoldering, hot air rework, and proper solder joint inspection. Don't worry if your first solder joints aren't perfect. Every experienced hardware engineer started with shaky hands and too much solder. Keep practicing. It gets easier with every board you build.

This soldiering training is the most impressive and immersive I've ever tried. It is 10x better than a YouTube tutorial video. It really allowed me to see the procedure from all the points of view, and even get super close to get the details. It is a collaboration between @gracia_vr and Imperial College London: they recorded a soldering session with Gaussian Splatting Videos (4DGS), so that you can enjoy it from your VR headset. You can see the action happening in front of you; you can pause and re-watch what you need, change the point of view, get closer, get more distant. And the quality with which it has been shot is impressive: I enjoyed this experience with my DELL Pro Max Tower T2 with NVIDIA Pro RTX 6000, and I could really see all the small details of the PCB that was being soldered! I was really impressed by it. But I also noticed some drawbacks. First of all, some scenes have artifacts that make seeing the details of the PCB hard. I think when it comes to training involving small details, the capture and reproduction of the splat should be flawless. Then, as much as I loved it as a passive experience, I would have liked to have also some sort of practice session in VR. The power of VR is to let you learn by doing in full safety, and this kind of training does not exploit it. But maybe the best way to enjoy it would be in MR, where you have this training video close to a real workbench where you do the actual soldering while following the tutorial. Gaussian Splat can really revolutionize training: this kind of recording is much better than any flatscreen experience, and more accurate than any 3D CGI recostruction. The full video of hand and glove co-design in action. For hand 🖐️ we try to make sure it's able to repeat what a human hand can do; hyperextension in the index finger is a great example here. Most robotic hands lack that, and it is very important for grasping objects securely. Let’s try to close the embodiment gap. For glove 🧤 we try to make sure it’s comfortable to wear, while also has same kinematics, contacts with the robot hand.

SqueezeMe: Efficient Gaussian Avatars for VR TL;DR: Three of these Gaussian Splatting avatars can be run at 72 frames per second. It runs locally on a Meta Quest 3 VR headset. Abstract (excerpt): While previous methods require a desktop GPU for real-time inference of a single avatar, we aim to squeeze multiple Gaussian avatars onto a portable virtual reality headset with real-time drivable inference. We begin by training a previous work, Animatable Gaussians, on a high-quality dataset captured with 512 cameras. The Gaussians are animated by controlling a base set of Gaussians with linear blend skinning (LBS) motion, and then further adjusting them with a neural network decoder to correct their appearance. When deploying the model on a Meta Quest 3 VR headset, we find two major computational bottlenecks: the decoder and the rendering. To accelerate the decoder, we train the Gaussians in UV-space instead of pixel-space and distill the decoder to a single neural network layer. Further, we discover that neighborhoods of Gaussians can share a single corrective from the decoder, providing an additional speedup. To accelerate the rendering, we develop a custom pipeline in Vulkan that runs on the mobile GPU. Putting it all together, we run 3 Gaussian avatars concurrently at 72 FPS on a VR headset.

This is the latest Google research on XR Interaction: World Mouse. Instead of using hand rays or gestures to point at things in the physical space, you move a cursor with a mouse and the system figures out where that cursor should sit in the 3D world. It works in two main ways: - On an object, the cursor follows the surface, so you can move precisely across walls, screens, furniture, or virtual objects. - Between objects, the system creates a smooth bridge through space, so the cursor can travel from one surface to another. That means you can go from a 2D panel to a 3D object, place content on a real wall, manipulate virtual objects, or interact with physical devices through digital proxies. Playing #VR games "without" a headset... ... Absolute genius or total abomination? This is called PortalVR and it lets you play any SteamVR game or app on your Windows PC without wearing a headset. Just plug in your #MetaQuest via USB, put it on your desk facing you, and use your controllers while facing your screen. The setup and connection is quite seamless and the team came up with a clever locomotion system to simulate turning the user's head by just tapping the top of the thumbstick. Now the biggest question is: does this make any sense? In my opinion, to play "standard" VR #games, it doesn't. You lose the beauty of being immersed and reaching out to grab objects or looking around can be tricky. On the other hand, I think there might be experiences specifically designed with this interaction in mind like interactive installations or educational experiences that could greatly benefit from a more tactile interface than a mouse and a keyboard

Looking for the best label design for the USB port on Flipper One USB-C1 is the main USB port on Flipper One. It can do all of the following: • Power IN/OUT — it can charge Flipper One and power other devices. • Video OUT — it supports DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C so you can connect it to an external monitor. • USB Host + Device — it can emulate USB devices such as Ethernet adapters, mass-storage devices, or serial ports, while also acting as a USB host for connected peripherals. The challenge is to communicate all of this with a single label on the device itself, so users do not have to read the manual. We are trying to make the labeling as clear and compact as possible. Well we had our concrete poured this past week, to say I’m not happy with it would be an understatement. We took a chance on someone who was starting their own business and unfortunately it bit us in the butt. Some positive take aways (trying to look at it optimistically) we now have a hard surface In front of our house to keep the mud and dirt at bay. The store has a solid surface with a drain that is usable. I politely gave my opinion of the situation and canceled him for the rest of the creamery concrete. Can’t get hung up on the little things, just need to learn and carry on. Here’s to finishing the rest of the creamery 🥂

Video Gaussian Splats are one of the most wonderful things I've experienced in my last year in tech and XR. They are like having a real person in front of you and have the potential to bring people closer to their idols, or their distant family members, or to store immersive memories forever. Now that I have a Dell Pro Max Tower T2 PC with a powerful #NVIDIA graphics card, I have finally been able to try at home the "memories" offered by Gracia AI, and boy, I was amazed. In the PCVR version, you can really get close to the artists dancing and syncing, and in the frames where the recording doesn't have many artifacts, it is almost like having a real artist in front of you. And it is impressive that this technology works even when the singer is dancing with quick movements! But these recordings can be pretty huge (the one with McKenzi Brooke is 21GB!) and require a powerful computer, so now Gracia is also streaming these GS videos, and I was able to try the Amy May performance also on Quest! I have to say that quality-wise, even streamed, they are amazing. But there are more artifacts than in the PC version: I noticed that when I got close to the singer. But there is a huge advantage in having them on Quest: you can see them in mixed reality. It was like having the singer having a private performance for me in my house. Crazy cool! I'll keep experimenting with these performances and maybe write an article in the upcoming weeks. I have to say that quality-wise, even streamed, they are amazing. But there are more artifacts than in the PC version: I noticed that when I got close to the singer. But there is a huge advantage in having them on Quest: you can see them in mixed reality. It was like having the singer having a private performance for me in my house. Crazy cool! I'll keep experimenting with these performances and maybe write an article in the upcoming weeks. James Harden with a long answer on how this Clippers team has impacted him: “Man it’s special. Really just giving yourself up for something bigger. Coming into this season, it was no expectations for this team for real. You look at the standings, they predicted us to be 13th seed or 12th seed in the West. Being around these guys from day one, it started in Arizona when I put the minicamp together. And then going into training camp and seeing we got something special. We got some dogs in this locker room… Here we are with an opportunity to be top 4-5 seed in the West and have a pretty good run in this postseason. They’ve impacted me in a positive way. They’ve made me lock in on both ends of the ball. And really just have that competitive mindset to want to go out and do whatever it takes to win. And that’s the beauty of a team.”
