This is not because they can't bring them home. If a service member dies overseas, they will be brought home. Being buried at sea is an honor for sailors and a timeless tradition. I am retired from the U.S. Navy and I have considered doing this when I die. Perspective is everything.

A Navy burial at sea may seem like an antiquated practice, but to many of US sailors, it’s a rite of passage. After bidding a beloved Navy veteran “fair winds and following seas,” one can have their remains interred on the seas they loved so much. The Navy will take care of this.
