🚨#BREAKING Somali Political Groups Announce New Alliance Calling For Self-determination in #Ethiopia Three Somali political organisations have on Sunday announced the formation of a new coalition aimed at advancing self-determination and consolidating political representation for #Somalis in Ethiopia’s Somali state. In a declaration issued in Jigjiga, the #Ogaden National Liberation Front (#ONLF), the Congress for Somali Cause (CSC) and the Somali Regional Democratic Alliance (SRDA) said they had formed the #Somali People’s Alliance for Self-Determination (SPAS), describing it as a unified political, diplomatic and civic platform. The alliance said it was responding to the historical incorporation of Somali territories into the Ethiopian state without the consent of the Somali people and accused successive governments of political exclusion, marginalisation and rights violations. The groups said a period of peaceful engagement following Ethiopia’s 2018 political transition had failed, adding that restraint had now come to an end.

🇨🇦🇸🇴 Today, I introduced a private member’s bill that would declare July of every year in Canada as Somali Heritage Month! I’d like to thank MP Ahmed Hussen for co-sponsoring this bill with me and for his counsel. I hope that all MPs will support this legislation. Canada is home to many Canadians of Somali heritage. Canadians of Somali descent have left and continue to leave a historic mark on Canada, with contributions that span communities across the country and are reflected in Canada’s economic, political, social and cultural life. If passed, Somali heritage month would give us an opportunity to celebrate that heritage, the role that Canada has played in supporting Somali Canadians and their contributions to Canada.

The question is, why don’t they take pride in what they have? And if they have no history or cultural legacy to stand on, why not create something unique for themselves? Everyone is welcome to celebrate our culture, but it becomes pathological when you start claiming what clearly isn’t yours. Alindi is a traditional Somali fabric, handwoven in coastal cities and worn by Somali women for generations. It was mentioned by Ibn Battuta in 1330 during his visit to Mogadishu, and it was traded widely across the seas, reaching as far as the Arabian Peninsula and India. Alindi is a symbol of Somali craftsmanship and cultural identity. I call on the Somali Ministry of Youth and Culture to officially register traditional Somali clothing, such as the Dirac and Alindi, as part of Somalia’s intangible cultural heritage through international platforms like UNESCO and similar global registries. We’re tired of this relentless obsession with Somali heritage. It’s time to protect and internationally recognize what rightfully belongs to us.
