By choosing dialogue, your MPs have shown maturity. The Federal Government of Somalia and the northern Somalia/Somaliland administration — or more bluntly, the secessionist Isaaq leadership (since this grievance isn’t shared by other clans) — must sit down and decide what’s next. Somaliland hasn’t been recognized for 35 years. Somalia has limped through fragility for 25. Neither path is working. The status quo serves no one. It’s time for grown-up dialogue — not wishful thinking. Even Trump is out here negotiating with his own enemies — Hamas, Iran, Russia, and North Korea. So the idea that “we won’t talk to the country we want to secede from” doesn’t hold up. That’s not how politics work. So the notion that Hargeisa will never talk to Mogadishu— a country and people whose very head you’re trying to sever — isn’t just unrealistic. It’s deeply immature. Somalis are ready to reason with you. We’re happy to: 1.Make Hargeisa the capital of a united Somalia; your current president — or Sheikh Mustafe, or any smart Isaaq leader — as Somalia’s next president; 3.Apologize and offer compensation for the military regime’s abuses — even though your last five leaders served that regime, while 99% of ours didn’t. Not because we’re guilty, but because you’re family. If it brings closure, we’ll do it. The world knows dialogue hasn’t been exhausted. They see we’re willing to go the extra mile. Your astute MPs also know that. Intransigence is not smart negotiating tactic. And as for you, sister — why confine yourself to a handful of northern towns, when the rest of your country — Mogadishu, Kismaayo, Garowe, Baydhabo Janaay, Jowhar, Luuq, Balcad — is open and waiting for you?
