Some drills don’t help anyone… so why are we still running them?

Shell drill is one of the best drills you can use to teach proper rotations and help. Certainly wouldn’t put it in same category as 3 man weave.

#FakeFundamentals

This is just wrong. 3 man weave is invaluable to timing, spacing, and cohesion. Shell drill is the ultimate teacher of proper positioning and defensive movement. Zig zag…you may have a point but run correctly and competitively can be a useful tool.

Not sure whats wrong withe shell drill. Especially when you consider there are tons of shell variations. Simple ball rotation shell issomething you do early on when guys are still learning their defensive responsibilities

The She’ll Drill is simple fundamentals It again goes to muscle memory. They need to learn where to be and when to be there. It teaches them their roles and others. It’s literally the foundation for your defense. Especially if you play Zone

Disagree with him about shell drill. I don’t know how anybody can teach defense without using variations of shell drill.

Love your take Coach ! But I just want to chime in… my kids love 3 man and 5 man weave ! Also my team loves shell . It builds connection especially when you add challenges to it ! The weave works for conditioning , getting players to come to the ball and moving w urgency!

"because those things suck" (Oliver, 2025) 😁

I hear you but there is a clear balance. Everything isn't going to be fun or enjoyable. Parts of basketball do suck, and we also need to help players learn how to handle that adversity.

No drill better than the 3 man weave!!!

What's the context here? Were the parents back-seat coaching?

Discipline is doing what you hate to do, but doing it like you love it. Be disciplined.

I disagree with shell drill. Players can not be held accountable for being out of position until you have shown them what it looks like.

Some drills help some Coaches & teams because of what their philosophies require. And then other teams need a completely different set of drills for their system. But yes, some coaches use drills wrong for their system because they don’t think things through well enough.

They don't do them before playing pickup because its pickup. And that's why pickup players suck.

3 man weave is fantastic conditioning. Great for motor skills and memory not to mention spacing. Put a number they need to reach and all of a sudden you have completion. They learn not to quit and figure things out on the fly. You must be doing it wrong

3 man weave is good for learning how to throw a “lead” pass.

Couldn’t disagree more on the shell drill.

I agree totally that 3 mean weave and zig zag are useless. You can still get some benefit from a shell drill.
