USG and other drywall companies suggest never applying more than 1/4 inch of joint compound at a time since it "wets back" the adjacent board and skins over preventing it from curing out the moisture. Our specs usually only allow 1/8" for the same reason.

Why putting so much plaster inside the whole? Fill it with something first, then plaster, and level it with the wall.
