Some established Ole Miss players were reportedly upset when NIL term sheets were leaked earlier this week, revealing the contract details for some of the new additions. This could be a reason why the Rebels lost key talent at the last second to the portal, which is one reason...

One of the worst byproducts of the loss to Tulsa on Saturday is that Rodney Fields, Hauss Hejny, and Gavin Freeman all had big days. And Kasen Carpenter, our center last year, had a great week at center for Kansas. So, while we spent a lot more on this roster, specifically at the spots mentioned, the production, after one game, doesn't support it. Now, it's Game 1, so this conversation is very premature, but OSU fans definitely have gotten it started. And the appearance is that it digs into more of a long-term concern that OSU fans may have come away with, which is the potential for misses in talent evaluation and/or development, both of which are long-term issues. I say all of that to say that will never be my takeaway. After covering Minor League baseball as closely as I have, I can tell you that even the best scouts miss, every year, and quite a bit. And that's all they do is evaluate the guys they get signed. There is absolutely no way this staff was going to be able to avoid misses when turning over this much of the roster. You just have to hope that none of them end up being egregious, or at the highest-profile positions/with the highest-profile players. Not that the other players don't matter, but there's a reason some get paid more than others, so just spitting some facts there. For the time this staff had, and for all the things they had to do to get this operation running, I will not ever second-guess if they chose a preference for familiarity when building their first roster here. To be transparent, I think they did that, and I think they have done that with their depth chart as well, but I could be 100% wrong on that. Having said all that, this is a situation that no one can hide from because when kids from the State of Oklahoma, who were good at OSU, get replaced by new players who were, almost certainly, chosen over them, OSU fans are going to pay attention because it's personal to a certain extent. There's no avoiding that, whether it's fair or not, which I don't think it is. But it's why I felt it was important to make this post. That's part of the role of the dice when replacing so many players. There are always going to be misses when you do that. No one can avoid that! #GoPokes #OkState

Billy Donovan explains why he’s not sure if the transfer portal is preparing players the right way for adversity in their lives “The one thing that I don’t like about NIL is, I have always felt that you guys, while you’re in college, should be taken care of with the amount of money that gets generated through athletics. So I think we’re all in agreement on that. Probably should have happened a long time ago.” “My issue with NIL is I think you’re teaching kids a really, really bad precedent. That you can go over here and make this amount of money, and then you’re not happy and pick up and go somewhere else.” “When you go to the NBA, you take a job and you sign a contract. You’re under contract. And I just don’t know how much that’s helping guys.” “What happens if one of these guys does get drafted, whether it be in the NFL, the NBA, and they sign a four-year deal and they’re not happy in the situation, not getting ready to play? They can’t leave.” “I think that you’ve got to be able to work your way through some adversity and difficulty sometimes to find out a little bit more about yourself. The way it’s set up, there’s no resiliency of going through anything that’s difficult and tough in life.” “I’m not begrudging anybody for making anything financially. But when you get into the real world and you sign contracts, you’re going to have to be responsible to those to a certain extent.”

🚨 A MUST LISTEN for all amateur ballplayers wanting to play in college. Long but SO MUCH VALUE here! Alabama HC Rob Vaughn on college baseball recruiting and the type of player you truly want in your program, no matter the level. “Our job in college baseball, yes, it's to win games. Yes, it's to develop big leaguers, and yes, it's all the things that we all talk about in recruiting, but more than anything, it's to prepare these kids to be successful for whatever comes next. And man, as good as the talent is in this league, as good as the talent is on this team, not all of them are going to be career big leaguers, you know. And I think what makes Tyler Fay’s journey so awesome, is in a world that is inundated with particularly moms and dads that want your kid to cut and run when when they're not starting every day or they're not playing every day. You see at one end of the equation, you either get the parents are like, ‘Hey man, put your head down to work. We got to get better.’ And you get the parents that feed into the narrative, ‘man, they're not giving you a chance. You got to go. You got to leave.’ the thing about him that makes him so special is regardless of whether Tyler's a 20-year big league or not, that guy's going to be a smashing success in life because when things get hard, he doesn't cut and run. He's not sticking his hand out looking for the next easy way and who's going to pay me more. He’s the I'm going to put my head down. I'm going to work and I'm going to get better.” Guys like him are the exact reason you believe in what you recruit. You believe in makeup, you better hunt makeup because that guy has that in spades. And that's why he deserves every ounce of what he's getting right now.”
