Happy Birthday Derek Randall. Few cricket photographs capture a player’s personality as perfectly as the famous image of Randall standing calmly at the crease, tipping his cap after a bouncer from Dennis Lillee. His most memorable innings was a brilliant 174 in the Centenary Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1976–77. His Test average of 33 may seem modest, but Randall was far from ordinary. Nicknamed “Arkle” for outrunning his Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club teammates, he was an outstanding fielder. A Trent Bridge favourite, he continued playing for Nottinghamshire CCC until 1993.
