CLEANING UP THE MINING SECTOR “All foreign investors and foreign-controlled entities currently participating in the small-scale gold mining sector are required to regularise their operations by transitioning to mining operations above the prescribed small-scale thresholds. Accordingly, all such operators shall, by 01 January 2027: a) Increase production capacity to levels beyond twenty (20) kilograms of gold per month; and/or b) Recapitalise investment to beyond United States dollars Fifteen million (US$15,000,000), thereby qualifying for operation under the large-scale mining category applicable to foreign investment participation.”

State Minister for Mineral Development Phiona Nyamutoro said the launch demonstrates Government’s commitment to developing the mineral sector under NDP IV. She noted that Yumbe and Zombo are among gold-rich areas in West Nile and urged Euro Gold to comply with the law, create jobs and internships, support communities and progressively move into medium- and large-scale mining. She reaffirmed Government’s resolve to close illegal mining operations and called for improved safety, insurance and healthcare for miners. Euro Gold CEO Ben Feni said the company spent more than two years surveying and exploring the area before securing its mining ground. Its operations cover about 79 square kilometres across West Nile, with Yumbe as its pioneer site. The company targets production of at least 20kg of gold per week and plans to establish a processing plant to strengthen traceability and accountability. “We are going to build our nation,” Feni said. Assimwe Kenneth, CEO of the Uganda Association of Artisanal and Small-Scale Miners, commended Euro Gold and Government for supporting formalisation. He urged communities to keep children in school and out of mining, encouraged the use of PPE and called for accessible insurance schemes for small-scale miners. Tusigwire Julius, Head of the Mineral Police Unit, said the unit, established in 2017, is responsible for combating illegal mining, mineral smuggling, fraud and forced labour. He revealed that more than 15 illegal mining sites have been closed this year, while raising concern over recent deaths in illegal mining sites. Eng. Grace Nakku, from the Office of the Commissioner, Minerals and Energy Department, said responsible mining is key to attracting investment and growing Uganda’s mineral sector. She advised that only people aged 18 and above should enter mining sites and encouraged Euro Gold to scale up while continuing to support artisanal and small-scale miners. The launch reinforces Government’s commitment to a formal, safe, responsible and investment-driven mining sector that creates jobs, supports communities and contributes to Uganda’s economic transformation.

Months later, I was right and they are wrong!!! Just fix what your promised and stop the talking… When I tell you these NDC party and government are a scam, believe cos I know what I am talking about. A few weeks to elections, they together with their friends like Osagyefo Oliver Barker-Vormawor calling for a ban on small scale mining. I disagreed and I still disagree today cos I don’t think it’s a strategy that provides long term solution. The NPP government placed a 20months ban on small scale mining between April 2017 - December 2018, it worked temporarily until it was lifted and we went back to ground zero. Ban isn’t a sustainable strategy, it has been tried before and a new approach is needed. The NDC and their friends insisted the ban was the way to go and they went ahead to actually make a 120 day social contract with Ghanaians to ban small scale mining. Today, they are in government and the NDC are running away from the same thing they fought me on but insisted was the way to go. The people are simply calling on you to do as promised. Your call now! And Guess what, their political allies who were on streets for weeks in the name of freedom fighters and insisted on a ban are today demonstrating and no longer calling for the ban. Today, they are no more calling for a ban but baby sitting their Friends in Government and telling them to end Galamsey before their Presidential primaries. It’s 2025, and I have won the debate on the ban against small scale mining. If the NDC think it’s the way to go as they disagreed with me in the past, then they shld go ahead and implement the ban.
