This man who is a landscaper said you should never build a tree coffin around a tree. He said it ends up making the tree die by restricting the roots and having too much mulch. I never knew they were called "tree coffins". I looked it up and it does say they can be very detrimental to your tree if not done correctly. The pavers can restrict root growth and the mulch shouldn't be too thick or torching the base of the tree. I have seen some pretty nice "tree coffins". I never knew they were bad for your trees. If you go into Soweto and attempt to chase away immigrants living there, it is often the South Africans themselves who will chase you away. These immigrants, whether documented or not, provide a direct source of income to local people. They rent rooms or entire houses from locals, buy vegetables from local vendors, purchase groceries from township shops, and offer various services to the community. It is as simple as that. I know this is being discussed at a very high policy level in America, but I have personally witnessed it on the ground while filming in Soweto. I saw elderly gogos standing up to protect immigrants—whether legal or undocumented—because they understood the practical reality. Their reasoning was clear and powerful: “If you get rid of them, you are getting rid of our income.”
