In southern Madagascar, a community united to rescue thousands of critically endangered tortoises swept away by floods caused by Cyclone Dikeledi. The Lavavolo Tortoise Center, home to 12,000 radiated and spider tortoises confiscated from wildlife traffickers, was inundated by metre-high floodwaters. Sanctuary staff, locals, and police waded through the water, using containers and makeshift rafts to save the tortoises. As he slowly tried to sneak away, one of the young males spotted him and, like a cat with its toy, decided to play 😅 Thankfully, the tortoises hard, round shell kept it safe and, when the lions finally grew bored of their new toy, he was able to scuttle away in peace.
