Doctors’ pay has been cut in real terms for over a decade, and resident doctors are still earning 21% less in real terms than a doctor in 2008. There are now far more doctors than speciality training posts, so thousands of doctors can’t progress in their careers to become specialists even though the NHS desperately needs more of them. Last year around 40,000 doctors applied for about 10,000 specialist training posts. Instead of expanding speciality training posts to tackle waiting lists, the number of potential future specialists is being reduced by this Labour Government. At the same time, during negotiations, the Government reduced the investment that had been discussed and spread it over three years instead. So we’re in a situation where pay is still down in real terms, training bottlenecks are rife across the NHS, and the number of potential future specialists is being reduced. That’s why I’m going out on strike with Resident Doctors.

But here’s what’s truly confusing: A physician assistant now starts on a salary that’s nearly £10,000 more than a fully qualified doctor. Read that again. Doctors - who train for years, take on legal responsibility, make life or death decisions; are being paid less than the people assisting them. Even if doctors won full pay restoration tomorrow, they still wouldn’t be on equal footing. Wes Streeting, how on earth is that acceptable? Doctors are leaving. The NHS is haemorrhaging staff. Patients are waiting longer for their appointments because this Government refuses to fix pay and value and retain doctors. Is it any surprise doctors are striking?

If you watch one thing today, make it this. An internationally trained doctor in Canada speaks out against the government's immigration plan and exposes a hard truth about our health care crisis. The Liberals claim that record immigration levels are the only way to fix Canada's health care system. But that's simply not true. They've ignored thousands of qualified doctors who are already in Canada unable to get licensed. Right now, there are at least 13,000 internationally trained physicians already here who are not working as doctors because they're stuck in a bureaucratic, licensing logjam. Instead, many of these doctors are driving taxis or working in factories instead of helping patients. Why should anyone believe the Liberals can get new immigrant doctors working when they failed the ones already in our country? Dr. Bichay came to Canada years ago, passed her exams, and did everything right. Yet she's still not allowed to practice, not because she isn't qualified, but because bureaucracy blocks her. In a powerful and heartbreaking statement at the health committee, she asked: "Why are you bringing more from outside the country when we are still here?" I could not agree more. Why should we add more people to a broken system before helping those already here?

The Liberals claim that record immigration levels are the only way to fix Canada's health care system. But that's simply not true. They've ignored thousands of qualified doctors who are already in Canada unable to get licensed. Right now, there are at least 13,000 internationally trained physicians already here who are not working as doctors because they're stuck in a bureaucratic, licensing logjam. Instead, many of these doctors are driving taxis or working in factories instead of helping patients. Why should anyone believe the Liberals can get new immigrant doctors working when they failed the ones already in our country? Dr. Bichay came to Canada years ago, passed her exams, and did everything right. Yet she's still not allowed to practice, not because she isn't qualified, but because bureaucracy blocks her. In a powerful and heartbreaking statement at the health committee, she asked: "Why are you bringing more from outside the country when we are still here?" I could not agree more. Why should we add more people to a broken system before helping those already here?

While patients wait years for surgery and months to see a specialist, Wes Streeting and Keir Starmer are threatening to cut the number of NHS specialist doctor training jobs. Most people don’t realise this, but doctors can’t just become Consultants, Surgeons or GPs on their own. They have to get a speciality training job first. These jobs are controlled and capped by the Government. So when the Government talks about cutting speciality training jobs, what they are really talking about is cutting the number of future specialist doctors in this country. At a time when the NHS already doesn’t have enough doctors. At a time when waiting lists are in the millions. At a time when patients are waiting months just to see a specialist and years for operations. Cutting the number of specialist training jobs will not fix the NHS. It will make waiting lists longer. It will make it harder to see a doctor. It will make the NHS worse for patients. Threatening to reduce the number of future doctors while patients are already struggling to access care is not just a deliberate workforce policy decision. It is a direct threat to the NHS and to the public who rely on it, coming from a ‘Labour’ Government.

Doctors are leaving the NHS because they are undervalued. In 2024, more doctors applied to leave the UK than in the previous decade combined - the result of a system that is fundamentally broken. We now have the diabolical situation where 40,000 doctors are competing for just 10,000 training jobs. Without these posts, doctors cannot train to become consultants or GPs. The NHS is actively blocking its own future workforce. At the same time, our pay has been eroded. Even after the most recent deal delivered during a period of double digit inflation, doctors are still around 20% worse off in real terms than in 2008 despite working just as hard, in a system where patients are sicker and more complex than ever before. Many resident doctors carry over £100,000 of student debt and start work as a fully qualified doctor on £18.62 an hour. We are asking for £22.67 an hour for foundation year one doctors for example, phased over time, not even all at once. Despite this, Wes Streeting has recommended another real terms pay cut this April. The jobs crisis and continued pay erosion are why resident doctors took strike action and why we are now reballoting. Resident doctors: return your ballot by 26th January.
