Someone explain this scheme to me from Vanderbilt.... Guard pulling one way, sniffer pulling the other-- Whats the idea/ concept behind this?

@TYash42 Maybe this?

@TYash42 Too much TRICKERY

@TYash42 It looks like counter split. This is from @CoachCroyle showing Penn State’s play card.

@TYash42 It’s counter left. Many defenses will key the movement of a sniffer to set their run fits. So the initial picture shows split zone to the defense. But then it’s counter. With the sniffer as the Ct action instead of the back you can get the back downhill fast.

It's a return counter scheme like some have said.... here is a complete rep of it from a different game.

@TYash42 It’s GY counter, with the sniffer going across and then he would become the second puller towards the side he started on. However, he gets picked off by penetration.

You are saying he was going to return to where he came from to be the wrapper?

@TYash42 @CoachBHodges What it looks like to me too. Maybe knew return motion would trigger the linebacker so they would be able to run underneath him.

@TYash42 It’s a good play and a great adjustment by the sniffer, but you’re giving the coaches far too much credit if you’re assuming they knew that was going to hit where it did. Kudos to them for getting guys to adjust on the fly, but no chance they thought the play was hitting there

@TYash42 Sometimes the most fun you have as a playcaller is when it works exactly how you thought it would but not at all how you thought it would 😂

@CoachBHodges So like this....

@TYash42 @coach_chandler Precisely

@TYash42 My guess: GY Counter Josh Heupel runs this a ton as a counter to split zone keys. Search his OL coach Glen Elarbee and there’s a really nice clinic on what they do.

@TYash42 Watch the PSOT. He stays on the double too long. That is the backer that the Y ends up picking up

@TYash42 I’m thinking it’s ISO with a G pull misdirection. The Sniffer leads in the A Gap for first opposite color. TB was hitting downhill, not to outside. If the LB follows the G then there should be a hole. The Nose screws the play by too much penetration. Also BSLB fills fast.

@TYash42 The ole “windback counter” just doesn’t get back across

@TYash42 We do this if a D is keying either our FB or guards. Break a tendency.

@TYash42 If sniffer was aligned presnap to the right, I think everyone would say that’s Counter left. Same assignment, different presnap alignment. Tendency breaker for defenses keying the sniffer?

@TYash42 Someone in the huddle got bad hearing or a coach got way too much time on his hands

@TYash42 A version of crunch?

I think it was counter, but the return action just got interrupted by the run through linebacker.

@TYash42 Seen it multiple times? Or did someone mess up and pull the wrong way on that one clip?

first play of game... and seen others run it... it has to be a scheme thing.

@TYash42 My only guess is the sniffer is creating a false read if defenses are keying him. Sniffer many times brings u right to the play.

@TYash42 Sometimes players go the wrong way??

I don't think so... first snap of game. I think it was counter but got blown up before he could return.

@TYash42 I saw Bosco run this with DJ like 8 years ago. The blitz really screws this play up and makes it look a little funky.
