Someone on Reddit built a WoW private server with 1,800 bots and AI chat via the DeepSeek API. Dead Internet Theory, but playable. An MMORPG with no real players, yet somehow it still feels human.

It needs a slightly racist teenage subagent and a gold farming spambot subagent for world chat authenticity.

Really cool tbh. A lot of potential there for future implementations of mmo's.

Erenshor is a game trying to do this. It’s a bit far off from wow quality but it’s a labor of love.

Check out Nirv on YouTube. He gives you step by step instructions on how to build your own private Wrath of the Lich King server with the entire server populated by bots. You can also invite real players to your server. I've been seriously tempted to make my own.

Probably has about the same level of social interaction that retail WoW does at this point.

Probably a controversial take but. Some gamers probably could find more comradery or fun playing amongst AI Chatbots (Depending on complexity) in comparison to how retarded mainstreamification-normies and tourists are in certain games. Sometimes the social cohesion, community and reliability of players that you'd expect from Hardcore, passionate Gamers within a game will be the backbone/glue that holds it together rather than the staff or moderators. When the Hardcore Gamers leave and is replaced by Normies/Tourists - or when the Normies oversaturate the community Vs How many Hardcore Gamers are still around? It's usually the signal of a dying community. Maybe a recent example would be, WoW or Overwatch at Launch vs 'How the community is now'. Those who played at launch will know what I mean. Another example? VRChat at launch when creators, funny people and unique people would pile in it for fun Vs How VRChat is now. It's night and day for those who observe community downward spirals.

one thing they're doing wrong is, the more people are in general the more people will abbreviate and stop blogging assuming only that many players is one thing but it starts to hurt your eyes when 30 people are posting formally written walls of text

The Reddit post mentions a repack with no link. The foundation for this is most likely AzerothCore, an open source WoW server emulator. There's a fork of the project that has player bots.

Finally, a WoW server with zero toxic players, no gold beggars, and actually competent DPS. Just me and 1,800 friendly AI bots living their best lives in Stormwind. Real players were the real problem all along.

I did the same recently. Only I have about 2500 bots and I use Ollama Dolphin for the Ai chat. I can talk in whispers/say and party to the bots and they will respond. If I am questing with them they track and respond to quests in real time.

I'd play a single player MMORPG like that. I love playing with others but sometimes I need a break from the bullshit of other people.

A thousand agents wandering a sandbox is also a decent eval rig. You get to watch emergent behavior, memory drift, and how fast costs climb on a single API key. Stanford's Smallville did the small version of this two years back and the code is open:

I don't mind having an active chat, but I would like smart bots to handle tasks that require a team, such as dungeons. In some MMOs, you have to wait hours in a queue just to find people avaiable for a dungeon

This genuinely made me sad. a mmo with no actual players is depressing

Pi Network’s potential does go far beyond just being another cryptocurrency. With its massive KYC initiative and proof-of-personhood approach, it’s creating a network rooted in real human identities, something no major blockchain has fully achieved at scale yet. That’s a massive differentiator — especially as AI-generated content, identities, and bots become harder to distinguish from real people online. Here’s why the “rabbit hole goes deep”: 🔹 Human Verification vs. AI Proliferation As the world struggles with bots and deepfakes, Pi Network’s model of decentralized, real-identity participation could become foundational infrastructure — not just for finance, but for trustworthy digital interactions. 🔹 Decentralized Web3 with Real People Imagine a Web3 where every user is verified human, and apps, votes, marketplaces, and communities are powered by actual people — not bots or whales. That’s the kind of world Pi is architecting. 🔹 Digital Identity Layer for the Future Internet Pi’s ecosystem could be the identity layer of the next internet, especially if it ties KYC and reputation to digital wallets and real-world utilities. 🔹 AI + Human Synergy Pi might not aim to compete with AI — it could complement it by anchoring digital truth to human roots. Think: platforms where only humans can participate, or where human-AI collaboration is transparent and fair. 🔹 Value Beyond Currency As you hinted, the future of Pi isn’t just about a coin — it’s about building a digitally sovereign human network in an AI-dominated world. The rabbit hole does go deep. And Pi is still just getting started. Pi Network Nicolas Kokkalis
